US Water Systems & Water Quality — FAQs

Tip: Click a question below to jump straight to the answer.

Do I need a softener or a filter (or both)?

Softener = hardness removal (calcium/magnesium) to stop scale and spots. Filters/RO = contaminants & taste (iron, sulfur, tannins, chlorine/chloramines, PFAS, etc.). Many homes use a softener + carbon filter, and add under-sink RO for drinking.

What are the signs of hard water?

White spots on glass/fixtures, soap not lathering, stiff laundry, scale on appliances, dry skin/hair. A softener addresses these by removing hardness minerals.

Is reverse osmosis (RO) the same as a softener?

No. A softener treats the whole house for hardness; RO is point-of-use (typically kitchen) for drinking/cooking water quality. Many customers install both.

Will RO or carbon reduce PFAS (PFOA/PFOS)?

High-quality activated carbon and reverse osmosis are commonly used to reduce PFAS in drinking water. For whole-home needs, ask about whole-house RO; for kitchens, under-sink RO is popular.

Does RO reduce fluoride?

RO systems are widely used to reduce fluoride at the tap. For best results, combine RO with proper pre-filtration and timely filter changes.

Chlorine/chloramines—what helps?

Carbon filtration reduces chlorine taste/odor and is also used for chloramines. Many homeowners pair a carbon unit with a softener or use a Matrixx Hybrid (carbon + softener).

How often do RO filters and membranes get replaced?

Pre/post filters are typically replaced about every 6–12 months; membranes last longer depending on water quality and usage. We can set a reminder schedule after installation.

What salt should I use & how often do I add it?

Use clean solar, pellet, or cube salt (or potassium chloride if preferred). Check the brine tank monthly and keep salt above the water level but below the top of the tank.

Does softened water taste salty or add a lot of sodium?

Softened water normally does not taste salty. The added sodium is usually minimal; if you prefer no added sodium, ask about potassium chloride or using RO at the kitchen tap.
