Generac Next Generation 18/17 kW Home Standby

The Next Generation Guardian 18 kW delivers strong, utility-grade backup power with modern controls and remote monitoring. Electronic Fuel & Ignition Control (EFIC) improves efficiency and lowers emissions, while built-in cellular keeps you connected through Mobile Link.

Model options

• 7259 — 18/17 kW Air-Cooled (Generator Only)
  Choose this when you already have a transfer switch, or want a custom whole-home/load-managed design. Includes Next Gen connectivity and diagnostics.

• 7324 — 18/17 kW Air-Cooled with 200A Automatic Transfer Switch
  A complete bundle for whole-home backup on up to 200A services. The included service-rated switch adds built-in whole-home surge protection.

Output ratings: 18 kW (LP) and 17 kW (NG), <5% THD clean power. Rated current up to 75 A at 240 V (LP).
Placement: can be installed as close as 18″ from a structure (follow local codes and clearances).

What an 18/17 kW generator can run (typical)

An 18/17 kW unit can back up most essential circuits plus many comfort loads in gas-heated homes. Actual capacity depends on starting surges, altitude, and temperature.

• Refrigeration & pumps

  • Refrigerator and freezer

  • One or two sump / well pumps (often up to ~1 HP with load management)

• Heating & cooling

  • Gas furnace or boiler (blower/circulators)

  • Central A/C ~3–5 tons with soft-start or smart load management (varies by LRA)

• Home essentials

  • Lighting circuits (LED), outlets, garage door opener

  • Internet/router, home office electronics, TVs

  • Kitchen outlets and a microwave; many ranges/ovens can be included if other loads are managed

Rule of thumb:

• On LP (18 kW), budget ~14–15 kW for steady loads and keep headroom for motor starts.

• On NG (17 kW), budget ~13–14 kW steady plus start headroom.

• Large electric loads (tankless electric water heater, electric dryer, EV charger) usually require smart load shedding or exclusion.
