The GV90+ Gas Boiler Series 2 is Weil-McLain’s condensing cast-iron boiler: a hot-water (hydronic) boiler for heating only, with efficiency ratings of 91.0% to 91.9% AFUE depending on size.

Who the Weil-McLain GV90+ Series 2 suits

The GV90+ is for homes with hot-water heating (baseboard, radiators or radiant floor) that want condensing efficiency but prefer a cast-iron primary heat exchanger over an all-stainless or aluminum design. It is a heating-only boiler: it does not make domestic hot water by itself. If you want the boiler to supply your faucets and showers too, it is paired with an indirect water heater (Weil-McLain’s Aqua Plus) or you keep a separate water heater. An indirect water heater is a storage tank heated by the boiler’s own hot water, so the boiler does double duty without being a combi. Because the GV90+ vents outdoors through 3-inch plastic pipe, it does not depend on a chimney, which makes it a practical replacement for an old chimney-vented boiler when the chimney is in poor shape or when the boiler will sit in a basement or utility room with a nearby exterior wall.

Sizing hint: the four sizes cover 70,000 to 175,000 BTU/h input, with net AHRI water ratings of 56,000 to 140,000 BTU/h. As a rough guide, the GV90+3 (net 56,000 BTU/h) fits a smaller, well-insulated home, while the GV90+5 and GV90+6 fit larger or older homes with more radiation. The right size is chosen from a heat-loss calculation of your home, not from the nameplate of the boiler you are replacing, because old boilers were often oversized.

Benefits of the GV90+ Series 2

• Condensing efficiency, 91.0% to 91.9% AFUE. AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) is the share of the gas you buy that becomes heat in your home over a heating season. At 91.9% AFUE, roughly 8 cents of every gas dollar goes out the vent, versus about 16 to 18 cents with an 82% to 84% AFUE conventional boiler. The stainless steel secondary heat exchanger recovers heat from the exhaust that a conventional cast-iron boiler sends up the chimney, and the GV90+ is ENERGY STAR certified.
• Cast-iron primary heat exchanger. The five-pass cast-iron sections carry the main heating load and are backed by Weil-McLain’s 20-year residential heat-exchanger warranty. Cast-iron sections are the thick, bolted-together water passages that give a boiler of this type its long service life.
• Vents outdoors with PVC pipe, no chimney needed. Direct vent or direct exhaust (the boiler can draw its combustion air from outdoors or from the room) through 3-inch PVC, polypropylene, CPVC or stainless pipe, up to 100 feet of 3-inch pipe, with an optional concentric kit. The boiler can go where a sidewall vent route is available instead of where the chimney is.
• Built for even, steady heat. A built-in bypass circulator protects the cast iron from cold return water, and the control is outdoor-reset capable, so the boiler can run at lower water temperatures on mild days for more even room temperatures and less cycling.
• Straightforward controls and safety. Hot surface ignition, a control module with indicator lights for service diagnosis, and an integrated low-water cutoff with a test button. Natural gas from the factory, field-convertible to propane with the included kit.

Every boiler installation is custom. The final price is confirmed by a free on-site estimate because the work differs from home to home: the sidewall vent route and vent materials, condensate drainage (a condensing boiler produces acidic condensate that must be neutralized and drained), piping and zoning changes (zoning means separate thermostats controlling different areas of the house through zone valves or circulators), circulators and zone valves, expansion tank and air separation, water-quality treatment, gas line capacity, electrical work, removal of the old boiler, permits and accessories. Installation and warranty

What a GSHA installation includes. Our standard Weil-McLain boiler installation scope covers setting and leveling the boiler; a new electrical disconnect with power and control wiring; new connections to the existing supply and return piping; a new cast-iron circulator; a backflow preventer with autofill; an air separator; a new expansion tank; a hydronic docking station; a commissioning kit (system protector and cleaner); a new Honeywell T6 Pro hydronic thermostat; removal of the old equipment; a one-year boiler tune-up; and start-up with a safety inspection. Because the GV90+ is a condensing, direct-vent boiler, the sidewall vent run in 3-inch plastic pipe and the condensate neutralizer and drain are confirmed on the estimate rather than the chimney flue connection used on a conventional cast-iron boiler.

Why venting differs from a conventional cast-iron boiler. A non-condensing cast-iron boiler (82% to 84% AFUE) sends hot exhaust up a chimney, and often needs a chimney liner, a metal or flexible sleeve inside the chimney that protects the masonry from the exhaust. A condensing boiler like the GV90+ cools the exhaust so much that it can leave through plastic pipe out a sidewall, and the moisture it wrings out of the exhaust has to be drained. That is why the GV90+ needs a vent route to the outdoors and a drain or condensate pump, and why it does not need a chimney liner.

Manufacturer warranty (Weil-McLain residential warranty). Primary cast-iron heat exchanger: 20 years (years 1 to 5, replacement boiler; years 6 to 20, replacement heat exchanger). Secondary stainless steel heat exchanger: 5 years. Parts: 2 years. Labor: not covered. The warranty is transferable and registration is not required. A separate commercial warranty exists.

GSHA Install-Right Limited Boiler Warranty (GSHA’s own coverage, separate from Weil-McLain’s). 2-year parts, 5-year labor and 20-year heat exchanger coverage on boilers GSHA installs. Labor coverage requires annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids GSHA labor coverage. Weil-McLain’s own coverage on the stainless secondary heat exchanger is 5 years; the heat-exchanger term GSHA applies to your boiler is confirmed on your written estimate.

Why an annual tune-up matters. A condensing boiler’s burner, secondary heat exchanger and condensate trap collect deposits over a heating season. An annual cleaning and combustion check keeps efficiency where it should be, catches small problems before they become no-heat calls, and keeps the GSHA labor coverage in force.

Do you install and repair Weil-McLain boilers in my city?

Can my existing or discontinued Weil-McLain boiler be repaired?

Yes. GSHA repairs existing Weil-McLain hot-water boilers, including older GV90+ units and discontinued models such as the ECO. A discontinued model does not automatically need to be replaced; repair is diagnosed on site.

What is the difference between a combi boiler and a heating-only boiler?

A combi boiler heats the home and makes domestic hot water in one appliance; a heating-only boiler such as the GV90+ heats the home only. A tankless water heater is different again: it makes domestic hot water only and does not heat the home. With the GV90+, hot water for faucets and showers comes from an indirect water heater fed by the boiler or from a separate water heater.

Is the GV90+ for steam or hot-water heating?

Hot water only, in all four sizes. In a hot-water (hydronic) system the boiler circulates heated water through baseboard, radiators or radiant floor tubing; in a steam system the boiler boils water and steam rises to the radiators. The GV90+ cannot be used on a steam system. For a steam home, Weil-McLain’s EG Series 7 is rated for steam or water.

What does installation include and what can change the price?

Installation includes the standard scope listed above: setting the boiler, wiring, piping connections, circulator, backflow preventer with autofill, air separator, expansion tank, hydronic docking station, commissioning chemicals, thermostat, removal of the old boiler, a first-year tune-up and a start-up safety inspection. The price changes with the sidewall vent route and materials, condensate drainage, piping and zoning changes, additional circulators or zone valves, water treatment, gas line capacity, electrical work, permits and accessories such as an indirect water heater. When does repair make more sense than replacement?

Repair usually makes sense when the boiler is younger, the cast-iron sections are sound, parts are available and the fix is a single component such as an ignitor, gas valve, circulator or control. Replacement is worth pricing when sections or the heat exchanger leak, repairs are repeating, parts are hard to find, or the boiler is old and inefficient enough that the fuel savings of a condensing boiler matter. A service visit gives you a repair price to weigh against an installation estimate.

What size GV90+ do I need?

The size comes from a heat-loss calculation of your home (insulation, windows, square footage and radiation), not from the old boiler’s nameplate. Input is the gas the boiler burns; the net AHRI rating (56,000 to 140,000 BTU/h across the four sizes) is the heat actually delivered to the radiators after piping and pickup losses, so the net rating is what gets matched to the heat loss.

Where can the GV90+ be installed?

Anywhere with a sidewall vent route of up to 100 feet of 3-inch pipe, a drain for condensate, gas and electrical supply, and clearance for service. Because it does not need a chimney, it can often go in a basement corner or utility room closer to an outside wall. The old chimney is left unused or serves the water heater only, which the estimate addresses.
