The EG Series 7 is Weil-McLain’s chimney-vented cast-iron gas boiler that can be set up for a hot-water (hydronic) system or, in a different configuration, a steam system. Who the EG Series 7 suits

The EG suits homes that already have a chimney in good condition and a boiler-based heating system with radiators, baseboard or in-floor tubing. Because every size is rated for water or steam, it fits an older steam-radiator home as well as a hot-water home. Eight sizes run from 75,000 to 282,000 BTU/h input; on a hot-water system that is a net AHRI rating of 56,000 BTU/h (EG-30) up to 206,000 BTU/h (EG-75), so it covers everything from a modest ranch to a large two-story house or a small multi-unit building.

The right size comes from a heat-loss calculation of your home, not from the nameplate on the old boiler, which was often oversized. The packaged PEG version (sizes 30 through 65) is a factory-assembled steam-only boiler.

Benefits you will notice

• Water or steam in one line. Every EG size is rated for both, so a steam-heated home can stay on steam and still get a current, ENERGY STAR certified boiler.
• Long-lived cast-iron sections. The heat exchanger is cast iron tested to 50 PSI. Cast-iron boilers tolerate the higher return-water temperatures of older radiator systems and are known for long service life; Weil-McLain backs the sections for 20 years on residential hot-water systems.
• Simple, chimney-vented design. The EG uses natural draft through your existing chimney with a draft hood and an automatic vent damper (the damper is an added item on the EG-75). There is no condensate to drain and no plastic vent to route through a wall, which keeps the installation straightforward when the chimney is sound.
• Steady, even heat. Cast-iron sections hold heat and release it gradually, so rooms warm evenly rather than in bursts.
• Modern controls on the water version. Series 7 water boilers use Weil-McLain’s Unity-CI text-screen control with a built-in low-water cutoff, so a technician can read the boiler’s status directly and the boiler shuts down safely if it loses water.

Price and estimate

GSHA does not publish a starting price for the EG Series 7. Every size is priced after a free on-site estimate, because the chimney, piping and controls vary too much from home to home to quote a package in advance.

Ratings are from Weil-McLain’s EG Series 7 product data. Input is the gas the boiler burns; the net AHRI rating is the heat actually delivered to the radiators after piping and pickup allowances, and it is the number that gets matched to your home’s heat loss. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the share of the gas you buy that becomes heat in the house over a heating season; at 84%, roughly 16 cents of every fuel dollar goes up the chimney. Weil-McLain rates the same boiler at 82% AFUE when it is set up for steam.

Every boiler installation is custom. The final price is confirmed by a free on-site estimate because chimney and venting condition (liner, flue size), piping and zoning changes, circulators and zone valves, expansion tank and air separation, water-quality treatment, gas line capacity, electrical work, removal of the old boiler, permits and accessories differ from home to home. Common extras are a chimney liner, zone valves or circulators, an indirect water heater and gas-line or electrical upgrades. DOE heating capacity is the heat leaving the boiler; the net AHRI rating subtracts piping and pickup losses and is the figure matched to your home. Square feet of steam is the traditional way steam radiators are sized: a technician adds up the radiators in the house to match it.

Installation and warranty

A GSHA Weil-McLain cast-iron boiler installation on a hot-water system includes setting and leveling the boiler; a new electrical disconnect with power and control wiring; connections to the existing supply and return piping; a new cast-iron circulator; a 1/2 in. backflow preventer with autofill; a Discal air separator; an expansion tank; a hydronic docking station; new flue piping to the existing chimney; a Protector F1 and Cleaner F3 commissioning kit; a new Honeywell T6 Pro hydronic thermostat; removal of the old equipment; a one-year boiler tune-up; and start-up with a safety inspection. Items such as a chimney liner, extra zones, zone valves, water treatment beyond the commissioning kit, gas-line or electrical upgrades and an indirect water heater are priced separately and confirmed at the estimate.

Weil-McLain manufacturer warranty. For residential hot-water installations, Weil-McLain covers the cast-iron sections for 20 years (warranty 550-141-051) and other parts for 2 years. For residential steam installations of the EG or PEG, the sections are covered for 10 years (warranty 550-141-053) and parts for 2 years. Labor is not covered by the manufacturer. The warranty is transferable and registration is not required.

GSHA Install-Right Limited Boiler Warranty. GSHA adds its own coverage on boilers it installs: 2-year parts, 5-year labor and 20-year heat exchanger. Labor coverage requires annual maintenance by GSHA, and service by another company voids the GSHA labor coverage. Weil-McLain’s own section warranty is 20 years on a residential hot-water installation and 10 years on a residential steam installation, so the 20-year heat-exchanger term is GSHA’s coverage rather than the manufacturer’s.

An annual tune-up matters on a chimney-vented cast-iron boiler: it checks combustion and draft, the vent damper, the low-water cutoff and the relief valve, which keeps fuel use where it should be and catches small problems before they become section leaks.

Can my existing or older Weil-McLain boiler be repaired?

Yes. GSHA repairs existing Weil-McLain boilers, including EG Series 6 units and older discontinued models, as long as parts are available. An older boiler does not automatically need to be replaced; a technician diagnoses the problem on site and tells you whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.

What is the difference between a combi boiler and a heating-only boiler?

A combi boiler heats the home and makes domestic hot water in one appliance; a heating-only boiler like the EG heats the home only. If you want the EG to supply hot water for showers and sinks, it needs an optional tankless coil, an indirect water heater (a tank heated by the boiler) or a separate water heater. A tankless water heater, by contrast, makes domestic hot water only and does not heat the home.

Is this boiler for steam or hot-water heating?

Both. Every EG Series 7 size is rated for a hot-water (hydronic) system at 84% AFUE or a steam system at 82% AFUE, with different controls and piping for each. Hot-water systems circulate heated water through radiators or baseboard with a pump; steam systems boil water and let the steam rise to the radiators on its own. What does installation include and what can change the price?

Installation includes the scope listed above: setting the boiler, wiring, piping connections, circulator, backflow preventer, air separator, expansion tank, hydronic docking station, flue piping to the chimney, water treatment kit, thermostat, removal of the old boiler, a one-year tune-up and start-up. The price changes with chimney condition (a liner is common with a new boiler), zoning and piping changes, gas-line capacity, electrical work, water quality, an indirect water heater and permits, which is why the final price is confirmed by a free on-site estimate. Zoning splits the house into areas with their own thermostat and zone valve or circulator, so rooms you use less can run cooler.

When does repair make more sense than replacement?

Repair usually makes sense when the boiler is younger than 15 to 20 years, the cast-iron sections are sound, and the fault is a control, ignition, circulator or valve part. Replacement is worth considering when sections leak, repairs are becoming frequent, parts are hard to get, or the boiler is badly oversized for the home. Does the EG Series 7 need a chimney?

Yes. The EG is a non-condensing, natural-draft boiler that vents through a chimney with a draft hood and vent damper; it cannot be vented through a sidewall with plastic pipe. Chimneys often need a properly sized liner when a new boiler is installed: a liner is a metal or flexible pipe run inside the chimney so the flue is the right size for the new boiler and protected from corrosive exhaust, and that is checked at the estimate. If you have no usable chimney, a condensing boiler such as the Weil-McLain GV90+ can vent through a wall instead.

What is the difference between EG Series 6 and Series 7?

Series 7 is the current revision of the EG line; Weil-McLain still lists a Series 6 page and has not labeled it discontinued. On the water version, Series 7 uses the Unity-CI text-screen control with a built-in low-water cutoff and a 50 VA transformer. If you own a Series 6, GSHA services it; a technician can confirm your series from the rating plate.
