About this model

The Navien NPE-150S was the smallest unit in Navien’s first-generation NPE-Standard series of condensing tankless gas water heaters. It was built for homes with modest hot-water demand: with a maximum input of 120,000 BTU/h, Navien rated it at 6.8 gallons per minute at a 35°F temperature rise and 3.2 GPM at a 67°F rise. In a Midwest winter, incoming water is cold enough that the higher temperature rise applies, so an NPE-150S typically supported one shower at a time plus a sink rather than several fixtures at once.

Like every NPE unit, it is a condensing tankless water heater: a second stainless steel heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust before it leaves the unit. That is why the efficiency rating is high (0.96 UEF, the federal water heater efficiency rating where higher is better) and why the unit uses PVC venting and needs a condensate drain.

Repair and service for this model

Discontinued does not mean your NPE-150S has to be replaced. GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) and an authorized Navien dealer, listed on Navien’s installer locator, and our Navien Level 3 trained technicians service and repair first-generation NPE units as well as the current NPE-2 series. Common service work on these units includes items such as descaling and flushing the heat exchangers, replacing wear parts, cleaning the condensate trap and neutralizer, and diagnosing error codes shown on the front panel.

Because Navien no longer produces the NPE-150S, part availability can vary. When you book a repair, tell us the error code or symptom and we will confirm what is needed. Annual maintenance keeps a condensing tankless unit running efficiently and reduces the chance of hard-water scale damaging the heat exchanger, which Navien’s warranty does not cover.

Replacement options

Current Navien alternative: Navien NPE-150S2

Navien’s discontinued-products list does not name a successor for the NPE-150S. The closest current Navien equivalent is the Navien NPE-150S2 condensing tankless water heater: it sits in the same position in the current NPE-S2 series, uses the same 18,000 to 120,000 BTU/h input range and the same 17.3" x 27.4" x 13.2" cabinet, and Navien’s own NPE-150S downloads page now points to it.

What changed in the NPE-2 generation: the NPE-S2 series added the EZNav multi-line control panel, a HotButton on-demand control and a Vent Installation Detector, and the NPE-150S2 is rated 0.93 UEF (slightly lower than the original 0.96) and is not ENERGY STAR listed on Navien’s model page. If your household needs more hot water than the original 150 size delivered, the NPE-180S2 is the next size up in the same series.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navien NPE-150S still made?

No. Navien lists the NPE-150S under its discontinued NPE-S series, and its product page now only offers documents and downloads. Navien does not publish a discontinuation date.

Can I still get parts and repair for my NPE-150S?

Yes, GSHA Services, LTD repairs first-generation NPE units. Many wear items are still serviceable, though availability of some parts can vary for an older model; we confirm parts when you book and tell you before any work is done.

Do I have to replace my NPE-150S because it is discontinued?

No. A discontinued model can keep running for years with maintenance. Replacement makes sense when a repair costs more than the unit is worth, the heat exchanger has failed, or you want more hot-water capacity than the 150 size delivers.

What replaces the NPE-150S?

Navien does not name an official successor, but the NPE-150S2 is the current model in the same size class and series. It is the closest current Navien equivalent (same size class, input range and cabinet), so that is the model we point owners to when replacement makes sense.

Will a new NPE-2 unit fit the same venting and gas line?

Often, but it has to be checked. The NPE-150S2 uses the same cabinet size, 2" or 3" PVC venting and 1/2" gas pipe capability (up to 24 ft) as the original, but vent run length, gas line capacity and the condensate drain must meet the new unit’s manual and local code.
