Description
Who the Navien NPE-150S2 suits
The NPE-150S2 is Navien’s entry-size condensing tankless water heater in the NPE-S2 “Standard” series. Navien rates it at 3.4 gallons per minute at a 67°F temperature rise, 5.3 GPM at a 45°F rise and 6.8 GPM at a 35°F rise. GPM at a temperature rise tells you how many fixtures can run at the same time when incoming water is cold, and in a northern Illinois winter the rise needed is closer to the high end of that range. That makes the NPE-150S2 a fit for a smaller home, condo or townhome with modest hot-water demand, a home where showers rarely overlap, or a dedicated unit for an in-law suite or workshop. If your household often runs two showers or a shower and laundry at once, the larger NPE-180S2 or NPE-240A2 is the better starting point. GSHA Services, LTD confirms sizing at the estimate before anything is ordered.
What you get with the NPE-150S2
- Hot water that does not run out. As a tankless unit, the NPE-150S2 heats water as you use it, so a long shower does not drain a tank. Within its flow limits, it keeps going as long as the tap is open.
- 0.93 UEF condensing efficiency. UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters; higher is better. A condensing tankless uses a second heat exchanger to capture heat from the exhaust that a conventional unit sends up the flue, which is why the rating is high and why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain. Because it captures that heat, it uses less gas for the same hot water; your actual bill depends on your gas rate and how much hot water you use.
- Two stainless steel heat exchangers. Both the primary and the secondary heat exchanger are stainless steel, the material Navien backs with a 15-year residential heat exchanger warranty with standard or controlled recirculation (see warranty terms below).
- Wall-hung and compact. The cabinet is 17.3 inches wide, 27.4 inches tall and 13.2 inches deep and weighs 62 pounds. It mounts on a wall indoors or outdoors and frees the floor space a tank water heater takes up.
- Room to add recirculation later. The NPE-S2 series has no built-in recirculation pump or buffer tank (that is the NPE-A2 series with ComfortFlow). ComfortFlow is a built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump that shortens the wait for hot water at the tap and smooths out temperature swings. If wait time at a far bathroom matters, Navien’s optional NaviCirc valve recirculates using your existing pipes when there is no dedicated return line, paired with an external pump.
Navien NPE-150S2 installation cost
Request an installation estimate. GSHA Services, LTD does not publish a package price for the NPE-150S2. Every GSHA Navien quote is a complete installed package, not an equipment-only price, and the estimate is free.
A standard GSHA tankless installation includes setting and leveling the unit, water piping modifications, gas piping modifications with a new gas valve, a new condensate drain line, isolation service valves, a 150 PSI relief valve, an in-line check valve, a stainless steel thermal expansion tank, new PVC venting, a condensate neutralizer kit, the electrical connection, a water heater protection system, a recirculation valve kit where recirculation is chosen, removal and disposal of the old water heater, and professional start-up with a safety inspection.
What can change the final quote: gas line capacity and length (Navien rates the NPE-150S2 for 1/2-inch gas pipe up to 24 feet, which can simplify the gas connection in some homes; GSHA verifies gas capacity on site), the venting route and length, where the condensate can drain, water quality treatment, electrical work, piping changes, permits, optional accessories such as NaviLink Wi-Fi control or NaviCirc, and how accessible the installation area is.
Financing available with approved credit. See GSHA financing options.

Installation and warranty
GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) and an authorized Navien dealer, listed on Navien’s installer locator at navieninc.com, with Navien Level 3 trained technicians. We install and service Navien tankless water heaters across McHenry County and Lake County, IL, and the surrounding Chicago suburbs and southeastern Wisconsin. See our service area.
Navien residential limited warranty (NPE-S2 series): 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 15 years on the heat exchanger for residential use with standard or controlled recirculation. With uncontrolled recirculation (an external pump running continuously without an aquastat or water-heater control), parts coverage is 3 years and the heat exchanger 5 years. Navien requires that the installation date be provided to Navien, with proof on request, and that the unit be installed by licensed professionals per the manual and local codes. Units bought through internet or e-commerce channels, or from a supplier not authorized by Navien, are excluded from coverage. Full terms: Navien NPE-S2 warranty.
GSHA Install-Right coverage on tankless packages: GSHA adds 5-year labor and 5-year parts coverage to its Navien tankless installations. Labor coverage is valid only with annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids GSHA labor coverage. GSHA also warrants its water, gas piping and venting connections for life. This is GSHA’s own coverage and is separate from Navien’s limited warranty.
Optional add-ons: the NaviCirc recirculation valve kit ($99.60) is a Navien option for the NPE-S2 series. Navien also lists NaviLink Lite ($153.55) and NaviLink ($288.43) Wi-Fi controls as options for the NPE-S2 series; GSHA confirms fit for your unit at the estimate.
Navien NPE-150S2 FAQs
Is the NPE-150S2 big enough for my home?
It is sized for lower hot-water demand: Navien rates it at 3.4 GPM at a 67°F rise and 5.3 GPM at a 45°F rise. In winter, when incoming water is coldest, that generally supports one shower comfortably with light use elsewhere. For a home where showers, dishwasher and laundry often overlap, the NPE-180S2 or NPE-240A2 gives more capacity. GSHA measures your demand at the free estimate.
How much does a Navien NPE-150S2 cost installed?
GSHA quotes the NPE-150S2 by estimate rather than a fixed package price. The quote is a complete installed package covering the unit, venting, gas and water connections, condensate drain, expansion tank, start-up and disposal of the old heater. Gas line, vent route, water treatment and accessories can change the final number.
Is the NPE-150S2 ENERGY STAR certified?
No. Navien’s model page lists ENERGY STAR certification as “No” for the NPE-150S2, while its rating is 0.93 UEF. The larger NPE-180S2, NPE-210S2 and NPE-240S2 are rated 0.96 UEF and are ENERGY STAR certified. If a utility rebate depends on ENERGY STAR status, tell us at the estimate so we can compare models.
Does it have built-in recirculation?
No. The NPE-S2 series does not include a recirculation pump or buffer tank; those are ComfortFlow features of the NPE-A2 series. If you want shorter wait times at distant fixtures, Navien’s NaviCirc valve can be added to recirculate through existing pipes with an external pump.
Where can the NPE-150S2 be installed and how is it vented?
Navien rates it for indoor or outdoor wall-hung installation. Indoors it uses 2-inch venting up to 60 feet or 3-inch venting up to 150 feet in PVC, CPVC, approved polypropylene or stainless steel, plus a condensate drain because it is a condensing unit. GSHA confirms the vent route and drain location during the estimate.
What warranty comes with a GSHA installation?
Navien’s residential limited warranty covers 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 15 years on the heat exchanger with standard or controlled recirculation. GSHA adds its Install-Right 5-year labor and 5-year parts coverage, which requires annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids GSHA labor coverage.
