Which Peerless boiler is right for your home

The current Peerless residential boiler we install is the Series MI-e, a cast-iron hot-water (hydronic) boiler. A few plain-language points help you decide whether it fits your home.

Hot water or steam

A hot-water boiler pumps heated water through baseboards, radiators or in-floor tubing and needs a circulator, an expansion tank and air separation. A steam boiler boils water and lets the steam rise to radiators on its own. The two are not interchangeable, so the boiler must match the piping already in the house. The Series MI-e is rated for hot-water heating only. Peerless does make steam-capable semi-commercial boilers (Series 64), but those are outside the residential sizes covered on this page.

Conventional cast iron or condensing

A non-condensing cast-iron boiler such as the Series MI-e runs in the low-to-mid 80s AFUE (the Series MI-e is rated 84.3% to 84.6%), vents through a chimney with natural draft, and uses cast-iron sections that are known for long service life. A condensing boiler reaches 90% AFUE or higher by pulling extra heat out of the flue gases; it needs a stainless steel or aluminum heat exchanger, PVC or polypropylene sidewall venting and a condensate drain, so it can often be placed away from the chimney. Heating-only boiler, combi boiler or tankless water heater

A combi boiler is one appliance that heats the home and makes domestic hot water. A tankless water heater makes domestic hot water only and does not heat the home. A heating-only boiler heats the home only. The Series MI-e is a heating-only boiler: if you want it to supply hot water for showers and taps, it pairs with an indirect water heater (a storage tank heated by the boiler) using the DHW-priority circulator output built into its control. Otherwise your existing separate water heater stays in place.

AFUE, net rating and sizing

AFUE is the share of the fuel’s energy that becomes heat for the house over a season; 84.6% AFUE means about 15% goes up the chimney. The input rating is the gas the boiler burns; the net I=B=R rating is the heat actually delivered to the radiation after piping and pickup losses, and it is the number a boiler is sized on. We size a replacement boiler by a heat-loss calculation for your house, not by the nameplate of the old boiler, which was often oversized.

Peerless Series MI-e sizes and installed-from prices

Ratings are the manufacturer’s published figures for the Series MI-e. Every MI-e ships with the Hydrostat IC integrated control (spark pilot ignition, low-water cutoff, boiler reset, two circulator outputs), a circulator, a 30 PSI relief valve and an automatic vent damper. What Peerless boiler installation costs and what’s included

Peerless Series MI-e boilers are installed from $7,777.38 (MI-e-03) to installed from $9,378.42 (MI-e-08). Every boiler installation is custom: the “from” price is the starting installed package for that model with GSHA’s standard installation scope, and the final price is confirmed by a free on-site estimate.

Our standard Peerless cast-iron boiler installation includes: setting and leveling the boiler; a new electrical disconnect with power and control wiring; connections to the existing supply and return piping; a new cast-iron circulator; a 1/2-inch backflow preventer with autofill; a Discal air separator; an expansion tank; new flue piping to the existing chimney; a Protector F1 and Cleaner F3 commissioning kit for the system water; a new Honeywell T6 Pro hydronic thermostat; removal of the old boiler; a start-up and safety inspection; and a boiler tune-up in the first year.

What can change the price from home to home:

• Chimney and venting condition, including a chimney liner or a different flue route. A chimney liner is a metal or flexible pipe run inside an older masonry chimney so the flue gases from a modern boiler vent safely without damaging the brick.
• Piping and zoning changes, additional circulators or zone valves. Zoning uses separate circulators or zone valves, each with its own thermostat, so different areas of the house heat independently.
• Expansion tank and air separation upgrades beyond the standard package
• Water-quality treatment and system flushing
• Gas line capacity and electrical work
• Adding an indirect water heater for domestic hot water
• Removal of an unusually large or inaccessible old boiler, permits and accessories, which are priced separately

Already own a discontinued Peerless boiler?

Peerless lists the Series MI (MI-03 to MI-09) as Out of Circulation. A discontinued boiler does not automatically need to be replaced. GSHA Services, LTD continues to service and repair existing Peerless boilers, including the Series MI, and many of them keep running well with an annual tune-up and the occasional part.

When replacement does make sense, the right boiler depends on your heating system (hot water or steam), the fuel, a heat-loss calculation, the chimney or venting, and the installation requirements of your home. Repair or replace?

There is no single answer, but these are the honest considerations we walk through with homeowners:

• Age: a cast-iron boiler that is well maintained can run for decades, so age alone is not a reason to replace it.
• Leaking sections or a cracked heat exchanger: a leak between cast-iron sections usually means replacement, because the repair costs approach the price of a new boiler.
• Repeated repairs: if you are calling for service every season, the money is often better spent on a new boiler with a fresh warranty.
• Efficiency: an older Peerless MI at 82% AFUE versus a new MI-e at about 84.5% is a modest difference; a condensing boiler at 90%+ is a bigger step but changes the venting.
• Parts availability: whether the needed part is still available is checked when we diagnose the boiler on site; when it is, repair is usually the sensible choice on otherwise sound sections.
• Safety: signs of flue gas spillage, a failed low-water cutoff or repeated relief-valve discharge need immediate attention and can tip the decision toward replacement.

Peerless warranty and GSHA Install-Right coverage

Manufacturer’s warranty (PB Heat, LLC)

Peerless residential hot-water boilers such as the Series MI-e carry a limited lifetime, non-prorated warranty on the cast-iron sections for the original owner at the original installation site, conditioned on registration, installation by a heating contractor in a one- or two-family owner-occupied home and annual inspection. Other parts are covered for one year. Labor is not covered by the factory warranty. Optional 5- and 10-year Extended Service Agreements (parts and labor) are available through the installing contractor and administered by Trinity Warranty.

GSHA Install-Right Limited Boiler Warranty (GSHA’s own coverage)

On Peerless boilers we install, GSHA Services, LTD adds its own Install-Right Limited Boiler Warranty: 1-year parts, 1-year labor and 20-year heat exchanger coverage. Labor coverage requires annual GSHA maintenance, and service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage. Note that the manufacturer’s own term on the cast-iron sections is a limited lifetime warranty, which is longer than the 20-year figure in our package. The optional Peerless Extended Service Agreement (10-year parts and labor, administered by Trinity Warranty and sold through the installing contractor) can be added at installation and is priced separately from the boiler package.

Do you install and repair Peerless boilers in my city?

Yes, if you are in McHenry County or Lake County, Illinois, the northern or western Chicago suburbs, or southeastern Wisconsin. Check the service area page or contact us to confirm your address.

Can my existing or discontinued Peerless boiler be repaired?

Yes. GSHA Services, LTD repairs existing Peerless hot-water boilers, including the discontinued Series MI. Repairs are diagnosed on site; a discontinued model does not have to be replaced as long as the sections are sound and parts are available.

What is the difference between a combi boiler and a heating-only boiler?

A combi boiler heats the home and makes domestic hot water in one appliance. A heating-only boiler, such as the Peerless Series MI-e, heats the home only; hot water for taps comes from an indirect water heater connected to the boiler or from a separate water heater. A tankless water heater is different again: it makes hot water only and does not heat the home.

Is the Peerless Series MI-e for steam or hot-water heating?

Hot-water heating only, in all seven sizes. If your home has steam radiators, the MI-e is not a match, and we will tell you so at the free on-site estimate.

What does installation include and what can change the price?

The installed-from package covers the boiler, circulator, backflow preventer with autofill, air separator, expansion tank, flue piping to the existing chimney, wiring, a Honeywell T6 Pro thermostat, water treatment, removal of the old boiler, start-up and a first-year tune-up. Chimney liners, piping or zoning changes, extra circulators, gas or electrical upgrades, an indirect water heater and permits can change the final price, which is confirmed by a free on-site estimate.

When does repair make more sense than replacement?

Repair usually wins when the cast-iron sections are sound, the repair is a single part such as a control, gas valve or circulator, and the boiler has been maintained. Replacement makes more sense when sections leak, repairs are recurring, or safety controls have failed.

How much more efficient is the Series MI-e than an older Peerless MI?

The MI-e is rated 84.3% to 84.6% AFUE versus 82.0% to 82.2% for the discontinued Series MI, so the gain is modest. The larger everyday benefits are the integrated Hydrostat IC control with boiler reset and low-water cutoff, which manages boiler water temperature and protects the boiler.

Does GSHA install the semi-commercial Peerless Series GM and Series 64?

Why does an annual tune-up matter on a cast-iron boiler?

A yearly cleaning and safety check keeps the burners and flue passages clear, verifies the vent damper, low-water cutoff and relief valve, and keeps the manufacturer’s warranty conditions and GSHA’s Install-Right labor coverage in force.
