About this model
The Navien NPE-210S was the 180,000 BTU/h model in Navien’s first-generation NPE-Standard (NPE-S) line of condensing tankless water heaters.
Condensing tankless means a second heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust. That is why the efficiency rating is high, and why the unit uses PVC venting and needs a condensate drain.
The NPE-S models had no built-in recirculation pump or buffer tank; that feature belonged to the NPE-A line.
Many of these units are still running in homes across McHenry County and Lake County, IL, the surrounding Chicago suburbs and southeastern Wisconsin. The original specifications below are kept for owners who need to look up their unit.

UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters; higher is better. The GPM figures at a given temperature rise tell you how many fixtures can run at once. In a Midwest winter the incoming water is cold, so the 67°F-rise figure is the realistic one for sizing. Turndown ratio, sound rating and ENERGY STAR status are not stated on the Navien pages we checked for this model; see Navien product data.
Repair and service for this model
Discontinued does not mean your NPE-210S has to be replaced. If it is heating water and passing its safety checks, keeping it in service is a reasonable choice. Regular maintenance is what keeps a condensing tankless unit running well, especially in hard-water areas.

Two things worth knowing about older units. Parts availability for a discontinued model can change over time. NaviLink Wi-Fi control works out of the box only on first-generation NPE units built on or after February 22, 2016; earlier units may need a new main control board and front panel, per Navien. Current Navien alternative
Navien has not named an official successor to the NPE-210S. The closest current Navien equivalent is the Navien NPE-210S2 Condensing Tankless Water Heater from the NPE-S2 series: same 180,000 BTU/h maximum input, same 17.3 in. x 27.4 in. x 13.2 in. cabinet size, and no built-in recirculation, like the original.
What changed in the NPE-2 generation, per Navien’s published data: a lower minimum input (12,000 BTU/h versus 19,900 BTU/h) for a wider modulation range, 2 in. PVC venting up to 75 ft instead of 60 ft, an EZNav multi-line control panel, and ENERGY STAR certification. If you want built-in recirculation to cut hot-water wait time, the NPE-A2 line adds Navien’s ComfortFlow buffer tank and pump; NaviCirc is an add-on valve that recirculates using existing pipes when there is no dedicated return line.

No. A discontinued model can keep running for years with regular maintenance. Replacement makes sense when a repair is not economical, the heat exchanger has failed outside of warranty, or you want the improvements in the current generation.
What replaces the NPE-210S?
Navien does not name a replacement, but the NPE-210S2 is the closest current equivalent, with the same 180,000 BTU/h maximum input and the same cabinet size. If you want built-in recirculation, look at the NPE-210A2 in the NPE-A2 line.
Will a new NPE-2 fit the same venting and gas line?
Often, but not always. The NPE-210S2 uses the same 2 in. or 3 in. PVC venting type, the same 3/4 in. gas and water connections, and the same cabinet dimensions, but venting route and length, gas line capacity and the condensate drain all have to meet the new unit’s installation requirements and current code.
