Combi-boiler or heating-only boiler?

A combi-boiler is one wall-hung unit that does two jobs: it heats your home through radiators, baseboard or in-floor tubing, and it makes domestic hot water on demand for showers, sinks and laundry. It replaces a separate boiler and water heater, which frees up floor space and means only one gas appliance to maintain. Navien’s NCB-H and NFC-H combi-boilers suit single-family homes with hydronic heat that also want endless hot water without a storage tank.

A heating-only boiler, such as the Navien NHB-H or NFB-H, does the space-heating job alone. It is the right choice when you already have a water heater you plan to keep, when you want to pair the boiler with an indirect tank for very high hot-water demand, or when the heating load is large. Heating-only boilers also carry a longer Navien heat-exchanger warranty than the combi models (NHB-H: 10 years, then pro-rated through year 15; NFB-H: 12 years, then pro-rated through year 15; combi-boilers: 10 years). Parts coverage is 5 years on all of them.

Navien also makes the NPF hydro furnace for homes with ductwork: its own condensing gas burner heats water in a sealed internal loop, and a variable-speed blower moves warm air across a coil into the ducts. The three NPF models GSHA installs are listed in the NPF hydro furnace section below.

Two ratings you will see below: AFUE is the heating efficiency rating (higher is better), and the turndown ratio is how low the burner can modulate below full fire, which reduces short cycling and keeps room temperatures steadier. All of these Navien models are condensing appliances: a second heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust, which is why efficiency is high and why they vent in PVC and need a condensate drain.

Navien NCB-H and NFC-H combi-boilers

The second number in the model name is the heating input in thousands of BTU/h (an NCB-240/110H heats at up to 110,000 BTU/h); the first number is the hot-water size class, and the table shows the actual hot-water rating. Sizing matters in a Midwest winter because incoming water is cold: a 70°F temperature rise is a realistic winter number, and the gallons per minute (GPM) at that rise tells you how many fixtures can run at the same time. All seven models are 95% AFUE, ENERGY STAR certified, indoor wall-hung, and modulate down to 15:1 on domestic hot water.

Specifications are from Navien’s official model and series pages; prices are GSHA installed packages (see what is included below). Navien’s flow tables run down to a 0.5 GPM minimum flow, and actual flow depends on incoming water temperature.

What separates the NFC-H from the NCB-H. The NCB-H uses Navien’s dual condensing stainless steel heat exchangers plus a separate stainless flat-plate exchanger for domestic hot water, and tops out at 150,000 BTU/h of heating. The NFC-H uses an ASME-certified stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger, which lets it reach 175,000 or 199,900 BTU/h of heating with a 13:1 or 15:1 heating turndown, while keeping the same 210,000 BTU/h hot-water capacity as the largest NCB-H. The NFC-H cabinet is about 4 in. taller, 4.5 in. deeper and 45 to 54 lbs heavier than an NCB-H, so wall space and mounting matter. Choose an NFC-H when the heating load is too large for an NCB-H.

Both series have built-in powered connections for three zone pumps or three zone valves. Navien lists these optional add-ons for the NCB-H and NFC-H series: NaviLink Wi-Fi control ($288.43) or NaviLink Lite ($153.55) for app control and alerts, and the NaviCirc valve ($99.60), which recirculates hot water through your existing pipes to cut wait time at distant fixtures when there is no dedicated return line. NaviCirc needs a separate recirculation pump, which we price on the estimate; accessory prices are confirmed on your written estimate.

Navien NHB-H and NFB-H heating boilers

These are wall-hung, heating-only condensing boilers for radiator, baseboard and radiant-floor systems, or for pairing with an indirect water heater. The NHB-H covers 55,000 to 150,000 BTU/h with dual stainless steel heat exchangers in a compact 17.3 x 23.8 x 12.8 in. cabinet. The NFB-H steps up to 175,000 and 199,900 BTU/h with Navien’s ASME-certified stainless fire tube heat exchanger and a longer heat-exchanger warranty. All six are 95% AFUE and ENERGY STAR certified, and Navien lists them for residential and commercial use; this page covers homes.

A higher turndown means the boiler can idle at a small flame on a mild day instead of cycling on and off, which is quieter, easier on parts and keeps supply temperatures even. The NHB-H has built-in zoning for a boiler pump plus three zone pumps or three zone valves, so many homes need no external zone panel. Navien NPF hydro furnaces

For homes heated by ductwork rather than radiators, Navien’s NPF700 series is a condensing hydro furnace: its own 97% AFUE modulating gas burner heats water in a sealed internal loop, and a variable-speed ECM blower moves warm air across a coil into the ducts. Because the burner modulates from 15 to 100 percent of its rating, the furnace can run long, low cycles instead of blasting on and off, and it can pair with a matched air-conditioning coil or heat pump. GSHA installs three sizes as complete packages; because the price book has no separate NPF installation scope line, the free estimate confirms exactly what the installation includes for your ductwork, venting and condensate drain.

What Navien boiler installation costs and what’s included

Navien combi-boilers are installed from $10,342.85 (NCB-240/110H) to $11,136.53 (NFC-250/200H); heating boilers from $8,211.42 (NHB-55H) to $9,512.23 (NFB-175H). Each is a complete installed package: equipment, materials, labor, removal of the old unit and start-up. The combi-boiler and boiler packages include different materials because the systems are piped differently.

Standard combi-boiler installation (NCB-H and NFC-H) includes:

• Setting and leveling the unit; water piping modifications
• Gas line modification with a new gas valve; new condensate drain line
• New 150 lb pressure relief valve; 4.8-gallon hydronic expansion tank and a domestic-water thermal expansion tank
• Navien primary manifold kit; NaviClean magnetic filter; commissioning chemicals (Protector F1 and Cleaner F3)
• New PVC flue venting
• Removal and disposal of the old equipment; start-up, testing and safety inspection

Standard heating-boiler installation (NHB-H and NFB-H) includes:

• Setting and leveling the boiler on a floor stand; new electrical disconnect with power and control wiring
• Supply and return connections with 1-1/4 in. isolation flanges; new 3-speed cast-iron circulator; aquastat; autofill combination valve
• 1-1/4 in. hydraulic separator; expansion tank; hydronic docking station
• 3 in. PVC venting with sidewall vent kit; commissioning chemicals (F1/F3)
• Honeywell T4 Pro hydronic thermostat

Navien warranty and GSHA Install-Right coverage

Two separate warranties apply to a GSHA-installed Navien boiler. Navien’s residential limited warranty covers the product; GSHA’s Install-Right coverage adds labor and parts protection on top of it. They are not the same thing, so we list them separately.

Navien residential limited warranty (single-family homes):

• NCB-H and NFC-H combi-boilers: 1-year labor, 5-year parts, 10-year heat exchanger.
• NHB-H boilers: 1-year labor, 5-year parts, heat exchanger fully covered for 10 years, then pro-rated in years 11 through 15 (the homeowner pays 30% to 70% of the heat exchanger cost).
• NFB-H boilers: 1-year labor, 5-year parts, heat exchanger fully covered for 12 years, then pro-rated in years 13 through 15 (50% to 70%).

Navien’s warranty runs from the date of original installation, and that date (with proof on request) must be provided to Navien; GSHA gives you the installation paperwork you need. Navien also voids its warranty on units bought through the internet or from an unauthorized supplier and requires installation by a licensed contractor, which is one reason to buy the unit and the installation together.

GSHA Install-Right coverage (GSHA’s own add-on):

• Combi-boiler packages (NCB-H, NFC-H): 5-year parts and 5-year labor coverage from GSHA. Labor coverage stays in force only with annual GSHA maintenance; service by anyone other than GSHA voids it. The heat exchanger itself is covered by Navien’s 10-year residential term.
• Heating-boiler packages (NHB-H, NFB-H): 10-year parts and 10-year labor coverage from GSHA, beyond Navien’s 5-year parts and 1-year labor. The same condition applies: annual GSHA maintenance keeps the labor coverage active, and service by others voids it.

Annual maintenance is not just a warranty condition. A condensing boiler needs a yearly check to hold its efficiency, and Navien lists failure to perform regular maintenance among the things that void its own warranty.

How much does a Navien combi-boiler cost installed?

Navien combi-boilers are installed from $10,342.85 for the NCB-240/110H up to $11,136.53 for the NFC-250/200H as complete GSHA packages. The price includes the unit, gas and water piping modifications, condensate drain, expansion tanks, primary manifold, magnetic filter, PVC venting, removal of the old equipment and start-up. Gas line, venting route and zoning changes can move the final number, which is why we confirm it with a free estimate.

What is the difference between the Navien NCB-H and NFC-H?

The NFC-H is the larger combi-boiler with a fire tube heat exchanger, and the NCB-H is the compact combi with dual stainless heat exchangers. NCB-H heating input runs 60,000 to 150,000 BTU/h; the NFC-H reaches 175,000 or 199,900 BTU/h with a 13:1 or 15:1 heating turndown. Both produce the same top hot-water rating at the largest sizes (210,000 BTU/h, 5.4 GPM at a 70°F rise), and both carry Navien’s 1 / 5 / 10-year residential warranty.

Which Navien boiler size do I need?

The right size comes from a heat-loss calculation of your home, not from the size of the old boiler. Navien’s heating inputs run from 55,000 BTU/h (NHB-55H) and 60,000 BTU/h (NCB-190/060H) up to 199,900 BTU/h (NFB-200H and NFC-250/200H). For a combi, we also match hot-water flow at a 70°F winter rise (4.1 GPM on the NCB-190 models, 5.1 GPM on the NCB-240 models, 5.4 GPM on the NCB-250/150H and NFC-H) to how many showers run at once.

Can a Navien combi-boiler replace my tank water heater and boiler?

Yes, that is exactly what the NCB-H and NFC-H are designed to do: one wall-hung unit provides both hydronic heating and on-demand domestic hot water. You reclaim the floor space of the old boiler and tank, and hot water no longer runs out. The combi must be sized for your peak hot-water demand; for a household with several bathrooms in use at once, a heating-only boiler with an indirect tank can be the better fit.

Does GSHA service Navien boilers it did not install?

Yes. GSHA Services is a Navien Service Specialist with Navien Level 3 trained technicians, and we repair and maintain Navien NCB, NCB-H, NFC, NFC-H, NHB, NHB-H, NFB and NFB-H boilers and NPE tankless water heaters regardless of who installed them. Navien’s product warranty stays with the unit; GSHA’s own labor coverage applies only to systems we installed and maintain.

What maintenance keeps the GSHA labor warranty in force?

An annual GSHA maintenance visit keeps the Install-Right labor coverage active on both combi-boiler and heating-boiler packages. A typical annual visit covers items such as the condensate trap, a combustion check, the heat exchanger, venting and safety controls; your maintenance agreement lists the exact scope. Service by another company voids GSHA’s labor coverage, though it does not affect Navien’s product warranty.
