Who the Navien NFC-250/200H suits

The NFC-250/200H is the largest combi-boiler in Navien’s NFC-H Series, built for larger homes where a single NCB-H unit would run short on heating capacity. A combi-boiler is one wall-hung appliance that handles both home heating (radiators, baseboard, radiant floor or an air handler) and domestic hot water, so it replaces a boiler and a water heater in one cabinet. Navien rates it for up to 199,900 BTU/h of heating input (183,000 BTU/h heating capacity) and up to 210,000 BTU/h for hot water. Navien also rates it for commercial use.

In a Midwest winter, incoming water is cold, so the 70°F-rise figure is the one to plan around: 5.4 GPM, which as a rule of thumb is roughly two showers and a sink at the same time, depending on your fixtures. With warmer inlet water the same unit delivers 8.4 GPM at a 45°F rise. Navien lists a smaller sister model, the NFC-250/175H, for homes that need less heating capacity.

• Heat and hot water from one unit. The NFC-250/200H replaces a separate boiler and water heater, freeing floor space in the mechanical room. The cabinet is 17.3 in. wide, 33.5 in. tall and 17.3 in. deep and hangs on the wall.
• 95% AFUE, Energy Star certified. AFUE is the heating efficiency rating; 95% means most of the fuel you pay for becomes heat in the home. As a condensing unit, it captures heat from the exhaust that a conventional boiler sends up the chimney, which is why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain.
• 15:1 turndown for heating and hot water. Turndown ratio is how low the burner can modulate. A 15:1 range lets the boiler run at a low, steady output on mild days instead of switching on and off, which reduces short cycling and keeps room temperatures more even.
• Stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger. Navien’s heating heat exchanger is stainless steel and ASME-certified with an “H” stamp, with a separate stainless flat-plate heat exchanger for domestic hot water. Stainless resists the corrosion that condensing operation can cause.
• Zoning and controls built in. The unit includes powered connections for three zone valves or three zone pumps, an outdoor reset function, an integrated boiler pump and a backlit control panel with a setup wizard. Optional NaviLink Wi-Fi control adds remote access from a phone.

This is a complete installed package for the Navien NFC-250/200H, not an equipment-only price. Installation and warranty

Navien residential limited warranty (NFC-H Series): 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 10 years on the heat exchanger. Navien’s terms apply only to single-family residential use; commercial or other use reduces coverage to 3 years parts and 5 years heat exchanger. The unit must be installed by a properly licensed contractor and operated per the installation manual. Proof of the installation date must be provided to Navien, so keep your installation paperwork. Navien states that units bought through the internet or e-commerce channels carry no warranty, which is one reason to buy the unit through your installer. Is the NFC-250/200H too big for my house?

It may be, if your home is average-sized. This is the largest combi-boiler in Navien’s NFC-H Series at 199,900 BTU/h heating input, and a 15:1 turndown lets it run as low as 13,300 BTU/h, but a heat-loss calculation is still the right way to size it. For smaller heating loads we also install the NFC-250/175H and the NCB-H Series, which start at lower heating inputs.

How much hot water does it deliver?

Navien rates it at 8.4 GPM at a 45°F temperature rise and 5.4 GPM at a 70°F rise. In winter around Chicago the incoming water is cold, so plan on the 70°F figure, which as a rule of thumb supports about two showers and a faucet at once, depending on your fixtures.

Does it need special venting?

Yes. As a condensing boiler it vents in 2 in. or 3 in. PVC, CPVC, polypropylene or stainless pipe, up to 65 ft with 2 in. or 150 ft with 3 in. pipe, and it needs a condensate drain. New PVC venting and a condensate drain line are part of our installed package; an unusually long or difficult route is one of the items that can change the quote.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes, with the optional NaviLink ($288.43) or NaviLink Lite ($153.55) Wi-Fi control, both listed by Navien as compatible accessories. Wi-Fi is not built into the unit.

Does it run on propane?

Yes. Navien ships the NFC-250/200H for natural gas with a propane conversion kit included, and the ratings are the same after conversion. Tell us which fuel you have when you request the estimate so the conversion is done at installation.

Can my existing or discontinued Navien boiler be repaired?

Yes. GSHA Services, LTD repairs existing Navien boilers and combi-boilers within its service area, including earlier NFC and NCB models that Navien no longer sells. A discontinued model does not automatically need to be replaced; if parts are available and the fire tube heat exchanger is sound, repair is usually the sensible first step. What is the difference between a combi boiler and a heating-only boiler?

This Navien NFC-H model is a fire tube combi boiler: one appliance that heats your home through radiators, baseboard or radiant floors and also makes domestic hot water for showers and taps on demand. A heating-only boiler such as the Navien NFB-H (also fire tube) heats the home only; for hot water it needs an indirect water heater or a separate water heater. A tankless water heater makes domestic hot water only and does not heat the house. The NFC-H is the larger combi in Navien’s line, so it suits bigger homes with higher heating and hot-water demand; the free on-site estimate confirms the fit.

Is this boiler for steam or hot-water heating?

This Navien NFC-H model is a hot-water (hydronic) boiler only; it is not a steam boiler and is not rated for steam in any size. It suits homes with hot-water baseboard, radiators or radiant floor loops. If your home has a steam system (one-pipe radiators with air vents, a sight glass on the boiler), it needs a steam boiler, not this model. When does repair make more sense than replacement?

Repair usually makes sense when the boiler is younger, the heat exchanger is sound, the fault is a single part such as a sensor, igniter, pump or gas valve, and parts are available. Replacement becomes the better choice when a heat exchanger is leaking or cracked, repairs are repeating every season, parts for an older model are hard to get, the unit is the wrong size for the home, or there is a venting or gas safety concern.
