Description

Who the Navien NCB-190/080H suits

The Navien NCB-190/080H is a condensing combi-boiler, which means one wall-hung unit handles both your home heating (radiators, baseboard or in-floor heat) and your domestic hot water, replacing a separate boiler and water heater. It is the second-smallest heating size in Navien’s NCB-H line, with a heating input of 11,000 to 80,000 BTU/h (74,000 BTU/h heating capacity) and a hot-water input of up to 160,000 BTU/h. Navien’s flow table lists 6.4 GPM at a 45°F temperature rise and 4.1 GPM at a 70°F rise. In a northern Illinois winter, incoming water is cold enough that the 70°F figure is the realistic one, so this unit fits a smaller to mid-size single-family home where a shower and one other hot-water fixture may run at the same time. If your home needs more heating output or more simultaneous hot water, GSHA will size you into a larger NCB-H model. It is rated for indoor wall-hung, single-family residential installation only.

Benefits you will notice

  • One appliance, two jobs. Heating and on-demand hot water come from a single cabinet measuring 17.3 in. wide by 29.3 in. tall by 12.8 in. deep, which frees the floor space a tank water heater and a floor-standing boiler would take.
  • 95% AFUE, ENERGY STAR certified. AFUE is the heating-efficiency rating; 95% means most of the fuel you pay for becomes heat in your home. Condensing operation captures heat from the exhaust that older boilers send up the chimney, which is why the unit can vent through PVC pipe and needs a condensate drain.
  • Modulating burner reduces short cycling. Turndown ratio describes how low the burner can throttle. Navien lists 15:1 for hot water and up to 7.3:1 for heating on this model, so the boiler can run at low fire on mild days instead of switching on and off.
  • Stainless steel heat exchangers. Navien uses dual condensing stainless steel heat exchangers plus a stainless steel DHW heat exchanger, and the unit carries an ASME “H” stamp.
  • Built for zoned homes. The control board has powered connections for 3 zone pumps and 3 zone valves, and the built-in DHW module includes the boiler pump, mixing valve and 3-way valve, so fewer external parts are needed.
  • Flexible venting and gas. Vent runs of up to 65 ft with 2 in. PVC or up to 150 ft with 3 in. pipe give GSHA options for routing, and the unit is field-convertible between natural gas and propane with the conversion kit Navien includes.

Price and installation estimate

Installed package price: $10,401.19. This is a complete installed package from GSHA Services, LTD, not an equipment-only price. The standard combi-boiler installation includes:

  • Setting and leveling the unit
  • Water piping modifications and gas line modification with a new gas valve
  • New condensate drain line and a new 150 lb pressure relief valve
  • 4.8-gallon hydronic expansion tank and a domestic hot-water thermal expansion tank
  • Navien primary manifold kit and NaviClean magnetic filter
  • Commissioning kit (Protector F1 and Cleaner F3)
  • New PVC flue venting
  • Removal and disposal of the old equipment
  • Start-up, testing and a safety inspection

Your final quote can change based on gas line capacity and length, the venting route and length, where the condensate can drain, water quality treatment, electrical work, zoning and piping changes to your existing heating system, permits, optional accessories such as NaviLink Wi-Fi control or a NaviCirc recirculation valve, and how accessible the installation area is. The estimate is free.

Installation and warranty

GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) and an authorized Navien dealer, listed on Navien’s installer locator at navieninc.com, with Navien Level 3 trained technicians. A combi-boiler installation involves both the heating side and the plumbing side of your home, so GSHA’s estimate visit checks the existing gas line, venting route, condensate drain, zoning and water quality before quoting. Optional add-ons priced in our price book include the NaviCirc recirculation valve ($99.60), which uses your existing hot and cold lines to shorten hot-water wait time when there is no dedicated return line, NaviLink Lite Wi-Fi control ($153.55) and NaviLink Wi-Fi control ($288.43); Navien lists all three as compatible with the NCB-H series.

Navien residential limited warranty (NCB-H): 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 10 years on the heat exchanger for single-family residential installations. Navien’s terms require installation by a properly licensed contractor and operation according to the manual; the warranty is void for units bought online or through unauthorized channels and for commercial or multi-dwelling use. The homeowner or installer must provide the installation date to Navien; if it is unavailable, Navien uses six months after the manufacture date as the start of coverage.

GSHA Install-Right coverage: GSHA’s combi-boiler package adds 5-year labor and 5-year parts coverage on top of Navien’s warranty. Labor coverage is valid only with annual GSHA maintenance, and service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage. GSHA’s Install-Right coverage is separate from Navien’s limited warranty, which has its own terms listed above.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Navien NCB-190/080H cost installed?

GSHA’s installed package price for the NCB-190/080H is $10,401.19. That covers the unit and the standard combi-boiler installation listed above; items such as long vent runs, gas line upgrades, zoning changes or accessories are quoted separately after a free estimate visit.

Is the NCB-190/080H big enough for my home?

It provides up to 80,000 BTU/h of heating input and 4.1 GPM of hot water at a 70°F rise, which fits a smaller to mid-size single-family home. GSHA sizes the boiler from your home’s heat loss and the number of fixtures you expect to run at once; the larger NCB-240/110H, NCB-240/130H and NCB-250/150H are available when more output is needed.

Does the “190” in the model number mean 190,000 BTU/h?

No. The second number is the heating input in thousands of BTU/h (080 = 80,000 BTU/h), but the first number is not the hot-water input. Navien rates this model at up to 160,000 BTU/h for domestic hot water, so use the published inputs when comparing models.

What venting does the NCB-190/080H need?

It is a direct-vent condensing appliance that can use 2 in. PVC up to 65 ft or 3 in. pipe up to 150 ft. Because it condenses exhaust moisture, it also needs a condensate drain, which is included in GSHA’s standard installation.

Can I add Wi-Fi control or recirculation later?

Yes. NaviLink and NaviLink Lite Wi-Fi controls and the NaviCirc recirculation valve are optional Navien accessories for the NCB-H series and can be added at installation or afterward.

What warranty comes with the unit?

Navien covers single-family residential installations for 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 10 years on the heat exchanger. GSHA adds 5-year labor and 5-year parts coverage, conditional on annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage.
