Who the Navien NFB-175H is for

The Navien NFB-175H is a heating-only condensing boiler for homes with hot-water baseboard, radiators or radiant floor heat. It does not make domestic hot water on its own; if you also want the boiler to feed your showers and taps, it can be paired with an indirect water heater tank, or you can look at a Navien combi-boiler instead. With a maximum heating input of 175,000 BTU/h (heating capacity 160,000 BTU/h; net AHRI rating 140,000 BTU/h), it fits larger homes or homes with a higher heat loss. It is the smaller of the two NFB-H models; the NFB-200H goes to 199,900 BTU/h. Sizing a boiler in a Midwest winter comes down to a heat-loss calculation of your house, not the size of the old boiler, and that calculation is part of our free estimate.

Benefits you will notice

• 95% AFUE, Energy Star certified. AFUE is the heating efficiency rating: 95 cents of every fuel dollar goes into heating the home. As a condensing boiler, the NFB-175H captures heat from its own exhaust, which is why it can vent in PVC and needs a condensate drain.
• 13.2:1 turndown ratio. The burner modulates from 175,000 BTU/h all the way down to 13,300 BTU/h. Turndown is how low the burner can go; a wide range means the boiler runs long, steady, quiet cycles on mild days instead of short cycling on and off.
• Stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger. Navien’s patented fire tube design is ASME certified with an “H” stamp and built with laser weld technology, and it carries Navien’s longest coverage on the unit (12 years full, then pro-rated).
• Compact cabinet. The cabinet is 17.3 in. wide, 27.6 in. tall and 17.3 in. deep and weighs 121 lbs. Navien designs it as an indoor wall-hung boiler; GSHA’s standard installation sets it on a floor stand, and either way it takes far less room than a cast-iron boiler.
• Flexible venting, fuel and zoning. Vents up to 65 ft in 2 in. pipe or 150 ft in 3 in. pipe (those lengths apply to schedule 40 PVC), and the vent pipe needs no clearance to combustibles. Runs on natural gas or propane, with the conversion kits in the box, and can run on existing 1/2 in. gas piping up to 24 ft, subject to local code; we check gas line capacity at the estimate. The control has built-in connections for one boiler pump or up to three zone pumps or zone valves.

Installation and warranty

What the standard boiler installation includes: the boiler set on a floor stand and leveled; a new electrical disconnect with power and control wiring; supply and return connections with 1-1/4 in. isolation flanges; a new 3-speed cast-iron circulator; aquastat; autofill combination valve; 1-1/4 in. hydraulic separator; expansion tank; hydronic docking station; 3 in. PVC venting with a sidewall vent kit; a commissioning kit (F1 / F3 water treatment); a Honeywell T4 Pro hydronic thermostat; removal of the old boiler; a boiler tune-up at one year; and start-up with a safety inspection.

Navien limited warranty (residential, single-family): 1 year labor, 5 years parts, and the heat exchanger is covered in full for 12 years, then pro-rated in years 13 through 15 (the homeowner pays 50%, 60% and 70% of the heat exchanger replacement in those years). The warranty applies to units installed by a licensed contractor and operated per Navien’s manual, transfers to later owners of the home as long as the boiler stays where it was installed, and is voided by internet or e-commerce purchases. Proof of the installation date must be provided to Navien; otherwise Navien counts from six months after the date of manufacture. Commercial installations carry different terms.

Labor coverage requires annual GSHA maintenance, and service by another company voids GSHA’s labor coverage. What warranty comes with it?

Navien covers residential units for 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 12 years full on the heat exchanger (pro-rated through year 15). GSHA adds 10-year parts and 10-year labor coverage, conditioned on annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage.
