NPE-240S repair and service

Discontinued does not mean your NPE-240S has to be replaced. Navien still publishes the manuals and warranty terms for the first-generation NPE-S line, and a working unit can stay in service.

About the Navien NPE-240S

The NPE-240S was the largest size in Navien’s first-generation NPE-S (“NPE-Standard”) line of condensing tankless gas water heaters. A condensing tankless heater uses a second heat exchanger to capture heat from the exhaust before it leaves the unit, which is why its efficiency rating is high and why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain. The “S” models delivered endless hot water on demand without the built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank found on the NPE-A models.

UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters; higher is better. The gallons-per-minute figure at a given temperature rise tells you how many fixtures can run at once when incoming water is cold, which matters in a Midwest winter. At a 67°F rise the NPE-240S delivered about 5.7 GPM, enough to run more than one fixture at a time in most homes; we confirm sizing for your home during the service or estimate visit.

Current Navien alternative

Navien does not name a successor for the NPE-240S on its discontinued-products page. The closest current Navien model, in the same series lineage and with the same 199,900 BTU/h maximum input, is the Navien NPE-240S2 Condensing Tankless Water Heater.

What changed in the NPE-2 generation:

• Modulates down to 13,300 BTU/h (the NPE-240S stopped at 19,900), so small draws hold a steadier temperature.
• ENERGY STAR certified, 0.96 UEF.
• 2″ PVC venting up to 75 ft (was 60 ft on the NPE-240S).
• EZNav control panel and built-in HotButton.
• Same 17.3″ x 27.4″ x 13.2″ cabinet, so it usually fits the same wall space.

Like the NPE-240S, the NPE-240S2 has no built-in recirculation. An optional NaviCirc valve plus an external pump can add recirculation using existing pipes when there is no dedicated return line.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navien NPE-240S still made?

No. Navien lists the NPE-240S under its discontinued products, and its product page now redirects to a documents-only download page. We have not found a published discontinuation date.

Can I still get parts and repair for an NPE-240S?

Yes, in most cases. GSHA Services, LTD services and repairs first-generation NPE units, and we confirm parts availability for your specific repair at the service visit. Regular maintenance, including a heat exchanger flush, helps an older unit keep running.

Do I have to replace my NPE-240S because it is discontinued?

No. A working unit can stay in service, and Navien’s residential warranty terms for the NPE-S line still apply for units within their coverage period from the original installation date. Replacement is only worth considering when a repair is uneconomical or the unit no longer meets your hot-water needs.

What replaces the NPE-240S?

Navien has not named an official successor. The current Navien alternative in the same size class is the NPE-240S2, which has the same 199,900 BTU/h maximum input and the same cabinet size.

Will a new NPE-240S2 fit my existing venting and gas line?

Often, but not always. The NPE-240S2 uses the same 2″ or 3″ PVC direct venting and the same 3/4″ gas connection, and it is field convertible between natural gas and propane. Our installation estimate visit confirms the venting route and length, gas line capacity and length, and the condensate drain before we quote, because those items change the final price.
