Selecting a Furnace

Finding the best furnace for your home is no walk in the park. A new furnace should improve the comfort of your space, while also reducing your home’s overall energy consumption. When choosing to replace your heating system, there are several factors you should consider.

Type of Fuel

Perhaps a better way of phrasing this question is, “What kind of fuel doesn’t a furnace use?” In their long history, dating back centuries, furnaces have used wood, coal, peat, oil, and almost anything combustible. Today, furnaces typically use one of three types of energy: electricity, natural gas or propane. Which type will work best for your home depends on a number of factors.

Natural Gas

This is the most common type of furnace in U.S. homes. They run on natural gas piped from a municipal supply. This fuels the burners that create a hot combustion gas that is transferred to the air blown through the ventilation system. Gas furnaces are the most efficient furnace model and cost less to run than other models because gas is a less expensive fuel. They can also reach very high temperatures. But since they require an existing gas line, not every home can install one.

Electric

Electric furnaces feature a smaller upfront installation cost compared to gas furnaces, although they do feature a higher annual operation cost. They are also known for their quiet performance and durability. There are also easier to install and maintain, ensuring you spend less money on heating maintenance. The drawback with electric furnaces, however, is that they are not as energy-efficient compared to systems running on gas, potentially making for an unwelcome surprise when your next bill arrives in the mail.

Propane

And speaking of a propane tank, they are available in many sizes to meet a wide range of heating needs, with some even being as large as 1,000 gallons. Propane furnaces will produce warmer air than electric furnaces and can provide the benefits of a gas furnace without the natural gas line.

Furnace Efficiency

Regardless of the fuel source, every furnace manufactured is evaluated and assigned an annual fuel utilization efficiency rating, also known as an AFUE rating. An independent organization within the HVAC industry determines this rating by calculating how much of the available fuel is actually used to heat your home versus how much is lost through venting. The rating for furnace efficiency considers the normal cycling of the unit and energy losses that may occur as a result of load changes. The AFUE can also be affected by adjustments the homeowner makes to the unit and weather changes in actual use.

Furnace Burner and Blower Operation

Within these two broad categories—conventional and condensing—furnace types break down even further according to the operation of the burner and blower. The term “stage” is used to refer to the operation of the furnace’s burner and blower, and, indirectly, the level of sophistication of the technology controlling the burner and blower. These stages include

Single-Stage Furnaces

This is the least expensive, and the label means that the burner and blower has one “on” stage.

Two-Stage or Dual-Stage Furnaces

This type has electronic controls that allow the burner flame and burner to be at a high and a low setting, depending on the level of heat required.

Modulating Furnace

This type has electronic controls for the burner and blower motor that allow very fine adjustments to the burner setting and blower motor speed, modulating them to keep the temperature of the room very close to the thermostat setting at all time.

Furnace Size

A one size fits all approach does not work when replacing your furnace or heating system. Having an improperly sized furnace that is too big or too small can cause the unit to not operate properly or efficiently. Choosing a professional furnace contractor like GSHA Services, LTD can ensure that your furnace replacement is right for your home. Our consultants have the experience and knowledge needed to help you select the correct size of furnace for your home.

If you plan on installing a new heating system, or want to expand your existing system, we’ll be happy to schedule a no-cost, no-obligation in home estimate with one of our trained comfort advisors. We know you want reliability and good value. That’s why we work with the top name brands in the industry. Let us design an efficient, cost-effective system for you. It’s what we do.

How Much Does It Cost To Install a New Furnace?

Thinking about getting your furnace replaced or looking to install a new furnace system? There are more furnace choices than you may think! Each type of furnace has its own purpose and benefit. While all furnaces are made to keep you warm in your home, there are upsides and downsides for the various furnaces we list below. Depending on the furnace type, you’ll find that the price differs.

The cost of furnace installation or furnace replacement service will depend on several factors, including the equipment you select and any modifications that must be made to your home to accommodate the system. The best way to find out the cost of the project is to schedule an estimate with us. We also offer financing and specials which can make furnace installation more affordable. See information about:

Natural Gas Furnace Installation Costs

Furnace Unit Cost:

  • Basic Natural Gas Furnace (80% AFUE): $800 – $1,500
  • Mid-Range Natural Gas Furnace (90-95% AFUE): $1,500 – $3,000
  • High-Efficiency Furnace (96%+ AFUE): $3,000 – $5,500

Installation Labor:

  • Installation labor generally ranges from $1,000 to $3,000, influenced by installation complexity (e.g., new ductwork, venting, or gas line modifications), local labor rates, existing furnace removal or retrofitting.

Additional Costs:

  • Ductwork Repair/Replacement: $1,000 – $5,000 (if needed)
  • Gas Line Installation/Upgrades: $500 – $2,000 (if not already present)
  • Flue Venting and Exhaust Work: $300 – $1,000
  • Thermostat Installation: $100 – $300 (if a new thermostat is needed)
  • Permits and Inspections: $100 – $500

Gas furnaces are one of the most popular, effective, and cost efficient ways to heat your home during the winter months. We’re not making that up, even the US Dept of Energy says so, with gas heat being used in almost 50% of all homes! Regardless of where you live through the USA, as long as you have access to natural gas or propane gas, you can have a highly efficiency and reasonably priced gas furnace installed at your house at an affordable cost.

Electric Furnace Installation Costs

Furnace Unit Cost:

  • Basic Electric Furnace: $600 – $1,200
  • Mid-Range Electric Furnace: $1,200 – $2,500
  • High-Efficiency Electric Furnace: $2,500 – $4,000+

Installation Labor:

  • Labor costs typically range between $1,000 to $3,000, depending on complexity of the installation (e.g., new ductwork, electrical upgrades), local labor rates, furnace size and placement.

Additional Costs:

  • Ductwork Repair/Replacement: $1,000 – $5,000 (if needed)
  • Electrical Upgrades: $500 – $1,500 (if required for higher-powered furnaces)
  • Permits and Inspections: $100 – $500

Electric furnaces only use electricity, which is the most efficient method of heating, however, it creates a higher electricity bill in the end. They are also less intensive to install than a gas furnace. It is extremely important to have the right furnace for the size of your house or else it will either run constantly or turn on and off too frequently, wearing it down.

Propane Furnace Installation Costs

Furnace Unit Cost:

  • Basic Propane Furnace (80% AFUE): $1,200 – $2,500
  • Mid-Range Propane Furnace (90-95% AFUE): $2,500 – $4,000
  • High-Efficiency Propane Furnace (96%+ AFUE): $3,500 – $6,000

Installation Labor:

  • Labor costs for propane furnace installation typically range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on complexity of installation (e.g., new venting, ductwork), propane tank installation or adjustments, local labor rates and region.

Additional Costs:

  • Propane Tank Installation/Replacement: $500 – $2,000 (if not already installed)
  • Ductwork Repair/Replacement: $1,000 – $5,000 (if needed)
  • Vent Pipe Installation/Modifications: $300 – $1,000
  • Thermostat Installation: $100 – $300
  • Permits and Inspections: $100 – $500

Propane furnaces are a good option for areas where natural gas or other materials are unavailable. However, heating costs vary greatly depending on the efficiency of the furnace you choose. A propane tank would also need to be installed, and propane gas can vary in price depending on the location of your home. The propane converts to gas once it is released, the gas then ignites and heats up which forces hot air through the ducts.
