About this model

The NPE-240A was the largest model in Navien’s first-generation NPE-Advanced series. It is a condensing tankless water heater: a second stainless steel heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust, which is why its efficiency rating is high and why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain. Its UEF is 0.96; UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters, and higher is better.

The “A” in the model name stands for Advanced: the unit has ComfortFlow built in. That is a small buffer tank and an internal recirculation pump that cut the wait for hot water at the tap and smooth out temperature swings.

Its 11.2 GPM at a 35°F temperature rise drops to 5.6 GPM at a 67°F rise. GPM at a given rise tells you how many fixtures can run at once, and in a Midwest winter the incoming water is cold, so the higher-rise figure is the realistic one for sizing.

Navien warranty periods run from the original installation date, and the homeowner or installer must be able to provide that date to Navien.

Repair and service for this model

Discontinued does not mean your NPE-240A has to be replaced. A first-generation NPE that is flushed and inspected each year can keep running. GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) with Navien Level 3 trained technicians and is listed on Navien’s installer locator, and we service and repair existing NPE units.

Typical tankless repair visits involve error codes, ignition faults, lukewarm water, reduced flow from scale build-up, or recirculation pump issues. Many are addressed with a descale flush, a replacement sensor or igniter, or a control adjustment. If a repair is not worth it, we will say so and give you a written estimate for the replacement instead.

Current Navien alternative

Navien NPE-240A2 condensing tankless water heater. Navien does not name a replacement for the NPE-240A, but the NPE-240A2 is the same size class in the current NPE-A2 series: the same 199,900 BTU/h maximum input, the same 11.2 GPM at a 35°F rise, dual stainless steel heat exchangers and built-in ComfortFlow recirculation.

What changed in the NPE-2 generation, per Navien’s published data: the minimum input dropped from 19,900 to 13,300 BTU/h (turndown up to 15:1, so the burner modulates lower and short-cycles less), 2 in. PVC venting runs up to 75 ft instead of 60 ft, the unit is lighter at 77 lbs, and it is Energy Star certified. The NPE-240A2’s control panel has a built-in HotButton for on-demand recirculation. Its UEF is 0.95, essentially the same efficiency as the 0.96 rating on the NPE-240A.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navien NPE-240A still made?

No. Navien lists the NPE-240A, along with the NPE-210A and NPE-180A, on its discontinued-products page. Navien’s current condensing tankless line with built-in recirculation is the NPE-A2 series; Navien does not name a direct successor to the NPE-240A.

Can I still get repair for an NPE-240A?

Yes. GSHA Services, LTD, a Navien Service Specialist (NSS), services and repairs first-generation NPE units. Contact us to schedule a repair visit.

Do I have to replace my NPE-240A because it is discontinued?

No. Discontinued means Navien stopped making new units, not that existing ones stop working. If your unit runs well and is maintained each year, keep it; replacement makes sense when repairs become frequent or a major component fails.

What replaces the NPE-240A?

Navien does not name a direct replacement. The closest current Navien model is the NPE-240A2, which matches the NPE-240A’s maximum input and flow rate and adds a lower minimum input, longer 2 in. venting and Energy Star certification.

Will a new NPE-2 fit the same venting and gas line?

Often, but not always. The NPE-240A2 uses the same 2 in. or 3 in. PVC direct venting, 3/4 in. water and gas connections and a similar cabinet width, but the existing vent route, gas line capacity and condensate drain still have to be checked against Navien’s current requirements.
