Description

Who the Navien NPF700-100U5CH suits

The Navien NPF700-100U5CH is an upflow, condensing hydro-furnace for homes with ductwork that want a high-efficiency, quiet forced-air furnace. A hydro-furnace (also called a hydro-air furnace) heats water in a sealed internal loop and blows air across a coil, so warm air reaches your rooms through the ducts you already have.

Navien rates this model at 97% AFUE with a gas input that modulates between 14,000 and 100,000 BTU/h. Its variable-speed blower delivers up to 2,000 CFM, with cooling airflow rated for a 2.0 to 5.0 ton air-conditioner or heat-pump coil (at 400 CFM per ton). It is a fit for single-family homes whose calculated heat loss falls within that input range, including many homes in McHenry County and Lake County, IL, and the surrounding Chicago suburbs and southeastern Wisconsin.

The upflow cabinet sends supply air out the top. Navien also offers downflow and horizontal NPF models, and notes that the horizontal version is normally used in attic or crawl-space installations. Because the burner modulates from 15% to 100%, we confirm sizing during the estimate visit rather than simply matching the old furnace’s rating.

Benefits you will notice

  • 97% AFUE efficiency. AFUE is the heating-efficiency rating for furnaces; higher is better. Navien rates the NPF700-100U5CH at 97%, which means most of the gas you pay for becomes heat in your home rather than exhaust. This is a condensing appliance: a stainless steel combustion heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust, which is why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain.
  • 15–100% variable capacity. The modulating burner turns down to as low as 15% of full output, so the furnace runs longer at a low, steady rate instead of blasting on and off. Fewer short cycles mean steadier room temperatures.
  • Variable-speed ECM blower. The electronically commutated blower motor ramps up and down with the burner, which keeps airflow gentle and quiet. Navien does not publish a decibel rating for this model; see Navien product data.
  • Stainless steel combustion heat exchanger, out of the airstream. The combustion side is stainless steel and sits outside the air path; a separate copper and aluminum hydronic heat exchanger warms the air. Navien backs the combustion heat exchanger with a limited lifetime warranty when the unit is registered (see warranty below).
  • Works with the thermostat and cooling equipment you already have. The unit uses a single- or two-stage thermostat, has Navien’s EZNav backlit control panel with a set-up wizard, and can pair with an air-conditioning coil or a heat pump for dual-fuel operation. Natural gas and propane are both supported, and the LP conversion kit ships in the box.

Installation and warranty

GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS), an authorized Navien dealer, and is listed on Navien’s installer locator at navieninc.com. Our Navien Level 3 trained technicians handle the installation, from venting and condensate through gas connection and start-up. Your written estimate lists the full installation scope for the NPF700-100U5CH before work begins.

Navien limited warranty (single-family residential): 1-year labor for the original owner. Parts are covered for 10 years when the furnace is registered online within 60 days of installation, or 5 years if it is not registered. The combustion heat exchanger carries a limited lifetime warranty when registered, or 20 years if not registered. Proof of the installation date must be provided to Navien, coverage applies only while the furnace stays at its original installation address, and Navien voids its warranty on units bought through the internet or from an unauthorized supplier. Registering within 60 days is worth doing; ask us about it at installation.

GSHA Install-Right coverage: GSHA Install-Right coverage is GSHA’s own warranty and is separate from Navien’s. Any Install-Right term for this furnace is stated on your written estimate. Where GSHA labor coverage applies, it requires annual GSHA maintenance, and service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hydro-furnace and how is it different from a regular gas furnace?

A hydro-furnace heats water in a sealed internal loop and blows air across a coil to warm your home, whereas a conventional gas furnace passes air directly over a fired heat exchanger. The Navien NPF700-100U5CH still connects to your ducts and thermostat like a traditional residential furnace, but its stainless combustion heat exchanger sits outside the airstream and its burner modulates from 15% to 100%, which gives steadier heat and quieter airflow.

Is the NPF700-100U5CH the right size for my home?

It suits homes whose heat loss falls within its 14,000–100,000 BTU/h input range and whose ductwork can carry up to 2,000 CFM. Because the burner modulates so widely, one unit covers a broad range of homes, but we confirm the size during the estimate visit rather than copying the old furnace’s rating.

Can it work with my air conditioner or a heat pump?

Yes. Navien rates the cooling airflow for a 2.0–5.0 ton coil at 400 CFM per ton, and the NPF series can pair with a heat pump for dual-fuel heating. If you plan to add or replace cooling equipment, mention it when you request your estimate so the coil and controls are quoted together.

What does the $6,331.72 installed package price include?

It is a complete installed package price for the furnace and installation by GSHA. Your written estimate spells out the exact installation scope for your home before any work starts, and items such as gas line changes, venting length, condensate routing, electrical, ductwork or zoning changes, permits and accessories can change the final number.

Does the NPF700-100U5CH need special venting or a drain?

Yes. As a condensing furnace it vents in 2-inch or 3-inch PVC, CPVC or approved polypropylene (up to 70 feet for 2-inch and 140 feet for 3-inch pipe) and it produces condensate that must drain, so we plan the vent route and drain location during the estimate visit.

Do I need to register the furnace with Navien?

Registration is not required, but it is worth doing: registering online within 60 days of installation extends Navien’s parts coverage from 5 years to 10 years and the combustion heat exchanger from 20 years to a limited lifetime term. Navien also requires proof of the installation date, so keep your GSHA invoice with your paperwork.
