KOHLER automatic transfer switches (ATS)
KOHLER describes the ATS as “the brain behind your home generator”: it turns the generator on when the utility goes down and off when power is restored. KOHLER sells two residential families, both available as standard or service-entrance-rated switches. Prices are KOHLER’s published MSRP for the switch alone; installation is included in your GSHA quote.

KOHLER RXT vs RDT: which one goes in your home?
- Model RXT is KOHLER’s digital switch. It talks to the generator’s RDC2 controller over a 4-wire connection, so the controller shows switch status, source voltage and transfer timing, and can run a loaded exercise. The RXT’s combined interface/load-management board manages up to six loads (two HVAC and four secondary). Available at 100 A, 200 A and 400 A, standard or service-entrance rated, in indoor (NEMA 1) or outdoor (NEMA 3R) enclosures. This is the switch in KOHLER’s 14RCAL, 20RCAL, 26RCAL and 10/12RESVL packages.
- Model RDT is KOHLER’s universal switch. It uses a 2-wire start signal, so it works with any standby generator, including older KOHLER models, and it is offered at 200 A as a standard, service-entrance, or service-entrance-with-42-space-load-center switch. Load shedding is added with the optional load-shed kit.
- Service-entrance rated (SE) switches install between the utility meter and your panel and act as the home’s main disconnect. They are the usual choice for whole-house coverage on a 200 A service and avoid a separate main breaker change.

Oil heater, breather tube heater and fuel regulator heater for reliable starting below 32°F. KOHLER part GM110948-KP1/KP2/KP4-QS for the 14/20/26 kW RCA; battery heater recommended below 0°F. Standard on most of our Illinois and Wisconsin installations.
Cellular monitoring kit
Keeps the KOHLER Energy Management app connected when your home internet is down. KOHLER GM123330-KP1-QS (MSRP $325) or APM402 cellular kit GM125911-KP1-QS (MSRP $876).
Load-shed kit and PIM
Load-shed kit for RXT or RDT switches, power relay modules (up to four per load-management device) and the Programmable Interface Module (2 inputs, 6 relay outputs) for controlling other equipment during an outage.
Maintenance kits and batteries
Genuine KOHLER maintenance kits with air filter, oil, oil filter and spark plugs (12/14 kW kit GM118705, MSRP $81; 26 kW kit GM119128, MSRP $112) and 12 V 500 CCA batteries (GM75513-KP1, MSRP $118).
Color panels and camouflage

KOHLER 7-year and 10-year limited warranties covering parts, labor and travel, on top of the standard 5-year/2,000-hour warranty. KOHLER runs seasonal dealer promotions on extended coverage; ask what is current.

What is an automatic transfer switch?
The automatic transfer switch (ATS) is the brain of a standby system. It watches utility power, starts the generator and moves your home onto generator power when the utility fails, then returns you to utility power and shuts the generator down when it is restored. It also keeps generator power from back-feeding the grid.
Do I need an ATS with a KOHLER generator?
Yes. A home standby generator only works automatically with a transfer switch. KOHLER “RCAL” and “RESVL” packages include one; “RCA” and “RESV” models are sold without so the right switch can be chosen for your service.
RXT or RDT: which KOHLER switch do I need?
The RXT communicates digitally with the RDC2 controller, supports the built-in load-management board and is the switch used in KOHLER packages. The RDT is a universal 2-wire-start switch used when a different generator or an older KOHLER controller is involved, or when a 200 A switch with a 42-space load center is wanted. We choose the model at the estimate based on your service size and panel.
What is load management?
The RXT’s combined interface/load-management board can control up to six loads (two HVAC units and four other circuits). It lets a smaller generator serve a larger home by briefly shedding an air conditioner or water heater when the generator is near capacity, then restoring it.
Does a KOHLER generator need a cold-weather kit in Illinois?
KOHLER recommends cold-weather accessories where temperatures fall below 32°F, and a battery heater below 0°F. For our area we install the cold-weather kit on nearly every RCA generator.
