Generac Guardian 10kW Home Standby Generator

The Generac Guardian 10kW delivers essential circuit power protection so your home stays ready during an outage. It’s an affordable automatic standby generator—often about half the cost of central air—yet powerful enough for everyday needs.

Model options

• 7171 — 10/9 kW Air-Cooled, Aluminum Enclosure (Generator Only)
  Choose this when you already have a transfer switch, or you want a custom whole-home setup with a larger switch.

• 7172 — 10/9 kW Air-Cooled with 16-Circuit, 100 A Transfer Switch
  A convenient kit for essential-circuits backup. The 16-circuit, 100 A switch feeds a dedicated sub-panel for your must-have loads.

Output ratings: 10 kW on LP and 9 kW on NG (120/240 V split-phase).
Placement: can be installed as close as 18″ from a building.*

A 10/9 kW Guardian is sized to handle core household circuits. Exact capacity depends on fuel (LP vs NG), altitude, temperature, and motor starting surges. Here are common examples:

  • One sump pump (typically 1/3–1/2 HP)

  • One well pump up to ~½–¾ HP with load management

• Heating & comfort

  • Gas furnace (blower and controls)

Rule of thumb:

• On LP (10 kW), budget ~8,000–8,500 W for continuous running plus headroom for motor starts.

• On NG (9 kW), budget ~7,000–7,500 W continuous plus start headroom.

• Large, resistive loads (electric oven, electric dryer, tankless electric water heater) are usually not backed up on a 10/9 kW unit unless other loads are shed.
