The Peerless Series MI-e is a current residential cast-iron gas boiler from PB Heat, LLC. It is a hot-water (hydronic) boiler for heating only: it does not make steam, and it does not make domestic hot water on its own.

Who the Peerless Series MI-e suits

The Series MI-e fits homes with hot-water heat (baseboard, radiators or in-floor tubing) that already have a working chimney, and homeowners who want a simple, long-lived cast-iron boiler rather than a condensing unit with sidewall venting. Peerless publishes seven sizes, from 70,000 BTU/h input (MI-e-03, 52,000 BTU/h net I=B=R rating) to 280,000 BTU/h input (MI-e-09, 205,000 BTU/h net). The right size comes from a heat-loss calculation of your home, not from the nameplate of the old boiler: many older boilers were oversized, and an oversized boiler short-cycles and wastes fuel. Benefits you notice at home

• Even, quiet hot-water heat. A hydronic boiler circulates warm water through baseboard or radiators, so rooms warm evenly without the blowing air of a furnace.
• Cast-iron sections built for a long service life. The heat exchanger is made of cast-iron sections joined with steel push nipples; cast iron tolerates the water temperatures of a conventional heating system and is the reason non-condensing boilers often stay in service for decades. Peerless backs the sections with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner (registration required).
• 84.3–84.6% AFUE. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the share of the fuel that becomes heat for the house over a season. The MI-e is in the normal range for a chimney-vented cast-iron boiler; a condensing boiler reaches 90%+ but needs different venting and a condensate drain.
• Hydrostat IC integrated control. One control handles spark ignition, the low-water cutoff, boiler reset (it lowers the water temperature when full heat is not needed) and two circulator outputs, one of which can give priority to an indirect water heater.
• Safety and standard equipment included. Rollout and vent safety switches, automatic vent damper, circulator, temperature-and-pressure gauge, 30 PSI relief valve and drain valve ship with the boiler.

Every boiler installation is custom. The “Installed from” price is the starting installed package for that model with GSHA’s standard installation scope (listed below). The final price is confirmed by a FREE on-site estimate, because the condition of the chimney and venting (a liner may be needed), piping and zoning changes, circulators and zone valves, the expansion tank and air separation, water-quality treatment, gas line capacity, electrical work, removal of the old boiler, permits and accessories differ from home to home. Input is the gas the boiler burns; the net I=B=R rating is the heat actually delivered to the radiators or baseboard after piping and pickup losses, and it is the number that gets matched to your home’s heat loss.

Installation and warranty

What a GSHA Series MI-e installation includes:

• Setting and leveling the boiler

Because the MI-e is a non-condensing boiler it must vent into a chimney. If the chimney is unlined, oversized or deteriorated, a liner is often required for safe draft; that is one of the items the on-site estimate checks. A condensing boiler, by contrast, vents through plastic pipe out a sidewall and needs a condensate drain, which is why it can go in more locations but costs more to install.

Domestic hot water: the MI-e heats the house only. If you want the boiler to heat your tap water too, an indirect water heater (a storage tank heated by the boiler) is added and priced separately; the Hydrostat IC control gives it priority. Zoning with zone valves or extra circulators and thermostats lets different areas run on their own schedules.

Peerless manufacturer warranty (residential water boilers): limited lifetime, non-prorated coverage of the cast-iron sections for the original owner at the original installation site, conditioned on registration; one year on parts; labor is not covered by the factory warranty. Conditions include installation by a heating contractor in a one- or two-family owner-occupied home and an annual inspection.

GSHA Install-Right Limited Boiler Warranty (GSHA’s own coverage, in addition to the manufacturer’s): 1-year parts and 1-year labor. Install-Right also carries 20-year heat-exchanger coverage; for the MI-e’s cast-iron sections, the manufacturer’s own limited lifetime term is the one that applies. Labor coverage requires annual maintenance by GSHA; service by others voids GSHA’s labor coverage.

An optional Peerless Extended Service Agreement (ESA) with parts-and-labor coverage up to 10 years, administered through Trinity Warranty, can be added at installation and is priced separately.

An annual tune-up matters on a cast-iron boiler: it keeps the burner and pilot clean, checks draft and the safety switches, confirms the low-water cutoff works and catches small leaks before a section is damaged. It is also required to keep GSHA’s labor coverage and the manufacturer’s warranty conditions.

Do you install and repair Peerless boilers in my city?
Yes, if you are in McHenry County or Lake County, IL, the northern and western Chicago suburbs or southeastern Wisconsin. GSHA Services, LTD works from Woodstock and Lake Bluff; check the service area page for your town.

Can my existing or discontinued Peerless boiler be repaired?
Yes. We service and repair existing Peerless gas-fired hot-water boilers, including the discontinued Series MI. A discontinued model does not automatically need replacing; the decision depends on the boiler’s condition and parts availability.

What is the difference between a combi boiler and a heating-only boiler?
A combi boiler heats the home and makes domestic hot water in one appliance. The Series MI-e is heating-only; tap water comes from an indirect water heater connected to the boiler or from a separate water heater. A tankless water heater, by comparison, makes hot water only and does not heat the house.

Is this boiler for steam or hot-water heating?
Hot water only, in every size. Hot-water systems circulate heated water through baseboard or radiators; steam systems boil water and send steam up to radiators. The MI-e cannot be used on a steam system.

What does installation include and what can change the price?
The package covers the boiler, circulator, expansion tank, air separator, backflow preventer with autofill, wiring, flue piping to the existing chimney, water treatment, a Honeywell T6 Pro thermostat, removal of the old boiler, start-up and a one-year tune-up. Chimney liner work, piping or zoning changes, gas line or electrical upgrades, an indirect water heater and permits change the final price, which the free on-site estimate confirms.

When does repair make more sense than replacement?
Repair usually makes sense when the boiler is younger, the sections are sound and the failed part is available. Replacement is worth considering when a section leaks, repairs are becoming frequent, the boiler is badly oversized or parts are hard to find. How do I know which MI-e size I need?
By a heat-loss calculation of your home, which we do during the estimate. The net I=B=R rating of the boiler (52,000 to 205,000 BTU/h across the seven sizes) is matched to that heat loss rather than to the old boiler’s nameplate.

Does the MI-e need a chimney liner?
Sometimes. The MI-e vents by natural draft into a chimney, and a liner is required when the existing chimney is unlined, too large for the boiler’s vent size or in poor condition. We check the chimney on site and include any liner work in the estimate as a separate item.
