Description
Who the Navien NPE-180A2 suits
The Navien NPE-180A2 is the smallest of the three NPE-A2 condensing tankless water heaters, with a maximum input of 150,000 BTU/h. Navien rates it at 8.4 GPM at a 35°F temperature rise, 6.5 GPM at a 45°F rise and 4.3 GPM at a 67°F rise. GPM at a temperature rise tells you how many fixtures can run at the same time: the colder the incoming water, the larger the rise the heater has to produce and the less hot water it can deliver per minute. In a Midwest winter that is why sizing matters.
The NPE-180A2 generally suits a smaller household or a home that rarely runs several showers at once. If your family regularly stacks showers, laundry and a dishwasher, ask us about the NPE-210A2 or NPE-240A2. Navien lists the unit for residential and commercial use; this page is written for homeowners. We confirm the right size with a fixture count and gas-supply check during the estimate visit.
What you get with the NPE-180A2
- Endless hot water at 0.95 UEF. UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters, and higher is better. The NPE-180A2 is a condensing unit: a second stainless steel heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust before it leaves the house, which is why efficiency is this high and why it vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain. Navien lists the model as ENERGY STAR certified.
- Less waiting at the tap. ComfortFlow is the NPE-A2 series’ built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump. Together they cut the wait for hot water and smooth out the temperature swings that can happen with a standard tankless heater when a faucet is turned on and off.
- A small footprint. The unit measures 17.3 in. wide by 27.4 in. tall by 13.2 in. deep and weighs 73 lbs. It hangs on a wall indoors or outdoors, so the floor space taken by a tank water heater is freed up.
- Flexible install paths. The NPE-180A2 accepts 2 in. or 3 in. PVC venting (up to 75 ft with 2 in. or 150 ft with 3 in.), can run on 1/2 in. gas pipe up to 24 ft, and is field-convertible from natural gas to propane. That gives us more options for routing the vent and reusing existing gas piping; we confirm what your home needs during the estimate.
- Dual stainless steel heat exchangers. Both the primary and secondary heat exchangers are stainless steel, and Navien backs the heat exchanger with a 15-year residential limited warranty (details below).
Price and installation estimate
Request an installation estimate. GSHA Services, LTD does not publish a package price for the NPE-180A2. We quote it as a complete installed package after a short visit to confirm the gas supply, venting route and drain location. The estimate is free.
Every Navien tankless installation from GSHA is a complete installed package. The standard tankless scope includes setting and leveling the unit, water piping modifications, gas piping modifications with a new gas valve, a new drain line, isolation service valves, a 150 PSI relief valve, an in-line check valve, a stainless steel expansion tank, new PVC flue venting, a condensate neutralizer kit, the electrical connection, a Penguin water heater protection system, a recirculation valve kit, removal and disposal of the old water heater, and professional start-up with a safety inspection.
What can change the final quote: gas line capacity and length, venting route and length, the condensate drain location, water quality treatment, electrical work, piping changes, permits, optional accessories such as NaviLink Wi-Fi control or NaviCirc, and how accessible the installation area is. Financing is available with approved credit.

Turndown ratio is how low the burner can modulate; a wide range lets the unit match small draws without short cycling. Navien publishes turndown for the NPE-A2 series as a whole rather than per model – see Navien product data for this model. Navien does not list a sound level or buffer tank capacity on its NPE-180A2 product pages; see Navien product data.
Installation and warranty
GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) and an authorized Navien dealer, listed on Navien’s installer locator at navieninc.com, with Navien Level 3 trained technicians. We install Navien tankless water heaters across McHenry County and Lake County, IL, and the surrounding Chicago suburbs and southeastern Wisconsin; see our service area.
Navien residential limited warranty (NPE-A2 series): 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 15 years on the heat exchanger for residential use with standard or controlled recirculation. Uncontrolled recirculation (an external pump running continuously without an aquastat) reduces coverage to 3 years parts and 5 years heat exchanger. Commercial or combination-heating use carries shorter heat exchanger terms. Warranty periods begin on the date of original installation, and that date must be provided to Navien, with proof on request. Navien voids coverage for units bought online or through unauthorized suppliers. Full terms: navieninc.com/series/npe-a2/warranty.
GSHA Install-Right coverage: on a GSHA tankless installation package we add 5-year parts and 5-year labor coverage. The labor warranty is valid only with annual GSHA maintenance, and service by others voids GSHA’s coverage. GSHA also warrants its water, gas and venting connections for life. Navien’s coverage and GSHA’s coverage are separate. Navien’s warranty periods run from the original installation date, which must be provided to Navien (with proof on request), so keep your GSHA installation invoice.
Optional add-ons: NaviLink Wi-Fi control ($288.43) or NaviLink Lite ($153.55) are optional Wi-Fi control accessories for the NPE-A2 series; they are not built in. NaviCirc is an add-on valve that recirculates hot water through your existing pipes when the home has no dedicated return line. A recirculation valve kit is part of our standard tankless scope; we confirm during the estimate whether your home needs it and quote any add-on pricing then.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Navien NPE-180A2 cost installed?
GSHA quotes the NPE-180A2 as a complete installed package after a free estimate visit rather than publishing a flat price. The quote depends on gas line capacity, venting route, drain location and any water treatment or electrical work. For comparison, our NPE-240A2 (natural gas) package price is listed on its product page and on the Navien water heaters page.
Is the NPE-180A2 big enough for my house?
It is usually right for a smaller household or a home that seldom runs several hot-water fixtures at once. Navien rates it at 4.3 GPM at a 67°F temperature rise and 8.4 GPM at a 35°F rise, and winter incoming water in northern Illinois pushes the required rise toward the high end. We size the unit from your fixture count and gas supply during the estimate.
What is the difference between the NPE-180A2 and the NPE-180S2?
The A2 has ComfortFlow, Navien’s built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump, which shortens hot-water wait time and steadies the temperature. The NPE-180S2 is the standard version without the buffer tank and internal pump.
Does a condensing tankless heater need special venting?
Yes, but it is usually simpler than a metal flue. Because the second heat exchanger cools the exhaust, the NPE-180A2 vents in 2 in. or 3 in. PVC and needs a condensate drain with a neutralizer, both of which are included in GSHA’s standard installation.
Can the NPE-180A2 run on propane?
Yes. Navien states that all NPE-2 models are field convertible from natural gas to propane. Tell us which fuel you have when you request the estimate.
What warranty comes with the NPE-180A2?
Navien’s residential limited warranty is 1 year labor, 5 years parts and 15 years on the heat exchanger with standard or controlled recirculation. GSHA adds 5-year parts and 5-year labor coverage on its installation package; the labor warranty is valid only with annual GSHA maintenance, and service by others voids GSHA’s coverage.
