Description
Who the Navien NPE-240A2 suits
The NPE-240A2 is the top size in Navien’s NPE-A2 “Advanced” condensing tankless series and the model to look at for larger households. Navien rates it at 11.2 GPM with a 35°F temperature rise, 7.8 GPM at a 50°F rise and 5.2 GPM at a 75°F rise. GPM at a temperature rise tells you how many fixtures can run at the same time; in a northern Illinois winter the incoming water is cold enough that the 70°F to 75°F column is the realistic one, which is why sizing matters. At 5.2 to 5.6 GPM in winter that covers roughly two showers at once plus a small fixture; in warmer months, at up to 11.2 GPM, considerably more. Its minimum flow of 0.5 GPM also lets it fire for a single hand-washing sink. If your home is smaller, the NPE-210A2 or NPE-180A2 may be the better fit, and if you do not need built-in recirculation, see the NPE-240S2.
Benefits you will notice
- Endless hot water at 0.95 UEF. UEF is the federal efficiency rating for water heaters, and higher is better. The NPE-240A2 is a condensing unit: a second stainless steel heat exchanger captures heat from the exhaust that a standard heater would send out the flue. That is why efficiency is this high, and why the unit vents in PVC and needs a condensate drain. It is ENERGY STAR certified (AHRI 206368359).
- Shorter wait at the tap. ComfortFlow is Navien’s built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump. It keeps a small reserve of hot water ready and can circulate it through the house, which cuts the wait for hot water and smooths out the temperature swings that basic tankless units can produce.
- Steady modulation for a single tap. The burner modulates between 13,300 and 199,900 BTU/h, which Navien describes as a turndown ratio of up to 15:1 for the NPE-2 line. A wide turndown means the unit can run low for a single faucet instead of cycling on and off, which is easier on the components and more comfortable at the fixture.
- Space back in your basement or utility room. The wall-hung cabinet measures 17.3 in. wide, 27.4 in. tall and 13.2 in. deep and weighs 77 lbs. It replaces a 40- or 50-gallon tank on the floor and can be installed indoors or outdoors.
- Flexible installation. Natural gas or propane with a field-convertible gas system, 2 in. PVC venting up to 75 ft, and a 1/2 in. gas line rated for runs up to 24 ft. In many retrofits the existing gas piping and a short sidewall vent can be reused; we confirm both during the free estimate.
Price and installation estimate
Installed package price: $6,148.43 (NPE-240A2, natural gas).
This is a complete installed package, not an equipment-only price. The standard GSHA tankless installation includes setting and leveling the new unit; water piping and gas piping modifications with a new gas valve; a new condensate drain line; isolation service valves; a 150 PSI relief valve, in-line check valve and stainless steel expansion tank; new PVC venting; a condensate neutralizer kit; electrical connection; the Penguin water heater protection system; a recirculation valve kit; removal and disposal of your old water heater; and professional start-up with a safety inspection.
The final quote can change with the capacity and length of your gas line, the venting route and length, where the condensate can drain, water quality treatment, electrical work, piping or zoning changes, local permits, optional accessories such as NaviLink Wi-Fi or a NaviCirc valve, and how accessible the installation location is. Propane installations are quoted individually. The estimate is free, and financing is available with approved credit.

Installation and warranty
GSHA Services, LTD is a Navien Service Specialist (NSS) and an authorized Navien dealer, listed on Navien’s installer locator, with Navien Level 3 trained technicians. Every NPE-240A2 we install is set up as a complete system: gas supply sized for the full 199,900 BTU/h input, PVC intake and exhaust run to a code-approved termination, a neutralized condensate drain, isolation valves for future service, and a professional start-up with a safety inspection before we leave.
Navien limited warranty (residential, standard or controlled recirculation): 1 year on labor, 5 years on parts and 15 years on the heat exchanger. Navien’s warranty runs from the original installation date, so the homeowner or installer must provide that date to Navien, with proof on request. Units bought through internet or e-commerce channels, or installed by a non-licensed installer, are not covered by Navien. If an external pump runs the recirculation loop continuously without an aquastat, Navien applies its shorter uncontrolled-recirculation terms (1 / 3 / 5 years); the built-in ComfortFlow system on this model is controlled by the water heater.
GSHA Install-Right coverage: on top of Navien’s terms, our installed tankless package adds 5-year labor and 5-year parts coverage from GSHA, plus lifetime coverage on the water, gas and venting connections we make. GSHA labor coverage is valid only with annual GSHA maintenance, and service by another company voids it. Annual maintenance on a tankless unit includes a descaling flush, which protects the heat exchanger where water is hard.
Optional add-on: NaviLink Wi-Fi remote control ($288.43 accessory price; installation confirmed with your estimate) lets you monitor and adjust the unit from your phone. If your home has no dedicated return line, a NaviCirc crossover valve lets the ComfortFlow pump recirculate through the existing pipes; we confirm during the estimate whether the valve kit included in the package covers this.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Navien NPE-240A2 cost installed?
The GSHA installed package price is $6,148.43 for the natural gas NPE-240A2. That covers the unit, the standard installation scope listed above, removal of the old water heater and start-up. Items such as a longer gas line, an unusual vent route or water treatment are quoted separately, and the estimate is free.
Is the NPE-240A2 big enough for my house?
For many two- and three-bathroom homes, yes; larger homes depend on how many fixtures run at once. Navien rates it at 5.2 GPM with a 75°F temperature rise, which is close to what a winter installation here sees and covers roughly two showers plus a small fixture at the same time, and 11.2 GPM at a 35°F rise in warmer months. We confirm the size during the estimate by counting the fixtures you expect to run at once.
What does ComfortFlow do?
ComfortFlow is a small buffer tank and recirculation pump built into the NPE-240A2. The buffer tank smooths out temperature changes when taps open and close, and the pump can circulate hot water toward your fixtures so you wait less. The NPE-S2 series does not include it.
Do I need a special gas line or vent?
Often not. Navien rates the NPE-240A2 for a 1/2 in. gas line up to 24 ft and for 2 in. PVC venting up to 75 ft. We measure your gas piping and pick a vent route during the estimate; longer runs or higher-demand homes may need a larger gas line, which is one of the things that can change the final quote.
What maintenance does it need?
An annual maintenance visit, which for a tankless unit includes a descaling flush of the heat exchanger and a check of the venting and condensate drain. Annual GSHA maintenance is also the condition for keeping GSHA’s 5-year labor coverage in force.
Can the NPE-240A2 run on propane?
Yes. Navien rates it for natural gas or propane with a field-convertible gas system and the same 0.95 UEF on both fuels. Our published package price is for natural gas; propane installations are quoted individually.
