The Carrier Comfort 14 (26SCA4) is for homeowners who want a dependable Carrier air conditioner with the new refrigerant at the entry point of the current Carrier line. It is a single-stage unit: it runs at full capacity when the thermostat calls for cooling and shuts off when the set point is reached. That simplicity keeps the price down and works well for most homes with sound ductwork and a working furnace or air handler. For a slightly quieter single-stage unit, compare the Comfort 16 (26SCA5); for better humidity control on mild days, compare the two-stage Performance 18 (26TPA8).

What you get with the 26SCA4

• Up to 16.0 SEER2 cooling efficiency. The 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3.5-ton sizes reach 16.0 SEER2 with a matched indoor coil; the 3-ton is 15.5, the 4-ton 15.2 and the 5-ton 15.0. EER2, rated up to 13.5, measures efficiency on the hottest afternoons, when the system runs longest.
• Puron Advance (R-454B) refrigerant. R-454B is the lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant Carrier uses across its current residential air conditioners. It cannot be added to an existing R-410A system, and an existing R-410A system does not need to be replaced simply because of its refrigerant.
• Single-stage scroll compressor. One compressor design that runs at full output or off, so cooling is steady and predictable and there is less to adjust or diagnose than on a staged system.
• Sound as low as 72 dBA. That rating applies to the 1.5 and 2.5-ton sizes; other sizes run up to 78 dBA. An accessory sound shield lowers the 1.5-ton unit to 70 dBA if the condenser sits near a patio or bedroom window.
• Works with a standard or programmable thermostat. The 26SCA4 supports a programmable or standard thermostat, so you can keep the one you have. If you want a new one, we price it at the estimate. The Carrier Smart Thermostat is an optional upgrade, not a requirement.

Standard installation includes a new outdoor condenser leveled on a composite pad, a new condensate line, sheet-metal modifications and a supply transition to fit the new indoor coil, a new electrical disconnect and whip with breaker or fuse protection, removal and disposal of the old equipment, refrigerant evacuation, charge and leak test to EPA standards, permit and inspection coordination, and a professional start-up with a follow-up performance check.

We install the 26SCA4 with a matched indoor coil, since R-454B cannot be added to an existing R-410A system. During the estimate visit we measure your home, inspect the existing coil, line set, ductwork and electrical, and confirm the correct size. Oversized equipment tends to short-cycle and leave humidity behind, so correct sizing is as important as the SEER2 rating.

Warranty, stated plainly. Carrier’s registered limited warranty covers parts, including the compressor and coil, for 10 years when the equipment is registered within 90 days of installation; unregistered equipment gets 5 years. Labor is not included in Carrier’s standard warranty. GSHA Services adds labor coverage for 10 years on systems we install, but only while the system receives annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids the labor coverage. The homeowner must also register the equipment with Carrier to activate the 10-year parts term. Ask about the GSHA ComfortCare maintenance plan, which covers the yearly heating and cooling visits that keep the labor coverage in force.

Do I have to replace my R-410A system because of the refrigerant change?

No. An existing R-410A air conditioner can keep running and can still be serviced and repaired. R-454B cannot be added to an R-410A system, so the refrigerant only becomes a factor when you replace the equipment.

Is the Comfort 14 loud?
