Who the Performance 16 (26SPA6) suits

The 26SPA6 is a good fit for homeowners in McHenry County and Lake County, IL, and the surrounding Chicago suburbs and southeastern Wisconsin who want a step up from a basic single-stage air conditioner without paying for two-stage or variable-speed equipment. It suits a typical single-family home that already has a working furnace or air handler and standard ductwork, and it pairs with an ordinary thermostat. If lower outdoor sound levels than the Comfort line matter to you, this is the Performance model to look at first.

What you get with the 26SPA6

• Efficient cooling. Rated up to 16.5 SEER2 and up to 14.5 EER2 according to Carrier. Actual ratings depend on the size you choose and the indoor coil it is matched with, which we confirm during the estimate.
• Quieter operation. The compressor is wrapped in a sound blanket. Carrier lists sound levels as low as 67 dBA on the 2- and 3-ton sizes; other sizes range from 69 to 74 dBA. Keeping outdoor noise down matters if the unit sits near a bedroom window or patio.
• Simple operation. A single-stage scroll compressor runs at one speed, cycling on and off as your thermostat calls for cooling, and it works with a standard or programmable thermostat you may already have.
• Current refrigerant. The 26SPA6 uses Puron Advance (R-454B), the lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant Carrier uses across its current residential air conditioner line. R-454B cannot be added to an existing R-410A system, and an existing R-410A system does not need to be replaced simply because of its refrigerant.
• Optional InteliSense features. Carrier’s InteliSense features are available only when the 26SPA6 is paired with the ecobee for Carrier Smart Thermostat Premium (sold separately). A standard or programmable thermostat works if you do not want that option.

Installation scope and warranty

A standard GSHA Services installation of the 26SPA6 includes the new outdoor unit leveled on a composite pad, a new condensate line, sheet metal modifications and supply transition to fit the new indoor coil, a new electrical disconnect and whip with breaker or fuse protection to Carrier’s specifications, removal and disposal of your old equipment, refrigerant evacuation, vacuum, charge and leak test to EPA standards, work that meets local codes, permit and inspection coordination, professional start-up with a safety inspection and homeowner walkthrough, and a follow-up performance check.

Warranty. Carrier’s registered limited warranty covers parts, including the compressor and coil, for 10 years for the original owner when the equipment is registered with Carrier within 90 days of installation; it drops to 5 years if it is not registered. GSHA Services adds labor coverage for 10 years, but only while the system receives annual GSHA maintenance; service by others voids the labor coverage, and the equipment must be registered with Carrier. Our ComfortCare Maintenance Plan, with two visits a year for heating and cooling, is available to keep that coverage in place.

Do I have to replace my R-410A air conditioner because of the new refrigerant?

No. An existing R-410A system does not need to be replaced simply because of its refrigerant, and R-410A remains available for servicing existing systems. The 26SPA6 uses R-454B (Puron Advance), which cannot be added to an R-410A system; the new refrigerant only comes into play when you install a new system.

Does the 26SPA6 need a special thermostat?

No. Carrier states it works with a standard or programmable thermostat. The InteliSense features are available only when it is paired with the ecobee for Carrier Smart Thermostat Premium, which is sold separately.
